...This Fire Burns for Summer of Punk? Seriously, you'd think the song was written just for that angle, even though Punk had been using it for a long time. I know a lot of people still wish that was his theme song, but I'm really glad the song was 'retired' after MITB. It felt like all the years of Punk using the song were leading up to that point and to keep using it would be getting rid of a perfectly good ending. Maybe it's just me, but seriously. Punk, the...well, punk against the establishment, gets his once-in-a-lifetime chance to become a legend and beat John Cena. And he enters the arena with these lyrics: All I've ever wanted was destiny to be fulfilled, it is in my hands, I must not fail, I must not fail.
Even through the darkest days, this fire burns, always. this fire burns, always.
This is the broken ground Misery begins to rise. Turn away from yesterday, tomorrow's in my eyes.
Nevermore to be held down by the wings of history. Nevermore to be cast aside, this day is mine.
I don't know if it was just me, but his theme song seriously added to the narrative of the moment. Yeah, the angle went to hell after that...but that bit, by itself? It was great and I'll always remember the strangely cinematic feel to the narrative Punk's theme song gave the moment.

Lyrics aside, I always hated that song with Punk. You could just tell that it was something they slapped on him, because that style of music just does not suit the guy. "Cult of Personality" is way better for two reasons, one being that he picked it himself and it fits him like a glove, and the other being that it's a classic radio smash. How many guys are running around with retro rock radio hits as theme songs?

Cult is better but I still like this song a lot.
Its also worked better on Punk than Orton, IMO.

Cult is better but I still like this song a lot. Its also worked better on Punk than Orton, IMO. It didn't suite Orton at all in my opinion. The pace Orton walks on the way to the ring didn't go with it at all. Punks walk, mannerisms and body language all suited This Fire Burns perfectly. Punk is edgy, and the song was edgy considering the rock the company goes for for theme songs/ppv themes. I it was perfect for Punk. Don't get me wrong I do like COP, but I do miss TFB. I do agree with the OP that it was almost poetic with the lyrics and it being retired at that MITB, putting an end to the chapter of that part of his career.

Both songs are good, both work well respectively for Punk.
Though not a theme song, during the hype for HBK vs HHH way back in (02/03?) they used the Saliva song Always and I feel that fit the angle better than any I have seen before or since.

I've never actually read the lyrics before, but you're right OP. Good call.

I think the opening bit is the only better thing about Cult. It's not either song fits with "PUNK"
But that entrance at MITB 11 was made by this song. The energy was insane.
