2011-I don't remember 2012-Attitude Era 2013-30 years of Mania
I like the modes, but i liked playing with the games own storyline outside of what has happened before in WWE.

2011 (WWE 12) had the stories with Sheamus, Triple H, and Jacob Cass.

I want another story mode like HCTP where things just seemed to happen at random and you relived some classic angles. Plus you got the hilarity of the pose-down in video game form and Vince doing everything in his power to make you the champion, only to say it's time for some 'new blood' the night after you won it.

Nothing will top Better-than-Utopia though One thing I liked about 2010's RTWM for John Cena was that they actually referenced that story in it. As for the modern stories...I'm wondering if it's just somewhat hard to get the guys in the studios to record lines and such for these modes, considering how much time the are on the road all the time, and thus it's just easier to do the "retro" stories.

There should be a season mode akin to WWF SmackDown! 2 or WWE Raw 2 where more than one player can join in. Plus, the season can last forever. Or, have a season mode similar to Shut Your Mouth or Here Comes The Pain with a variety of storylines to take place in over the course of a year or two, and the stats can be carried over to your next playthrough.

There should be a season mode akin to WWF SmackDown! 2 That's pretty much universe mode.

I like the retrospective modes better than the original stories. The original stories are all terrible. I do hope they get in the habit of using more recent history, if every new game had the best matches of the prior year with a few bonuses here and there would be cool by me.

I'd be fine with that, but what I really want out of a wrestling game is something a bit different and I guess more old-school:
I just want a career mode where you choose any wrestler you want, and take him through an indefinite career, working your way up and down the card, fighting for championships, winning and losing them...something like what Raw 2 and Smackdown 2 had. Little non-voiced promos here and there, etc. Universe mode is KIND of like that, but yeah, not quite what I'm looking for.
EDIT: Oh hey, injustice45 beat me to it. Glad I'm not the only one looking for something like that.

I think the retro stories help sell the game better. I had no real intention of getting '13 except the Attitude Era mode sounded awesome. I REALLY don't want to get 2K14, but the Mania mode sounds fantastic. WWE's lucky Watch Dogs was delayed until next year.

Also, the aforementioned Better-Than-Utopia story is probably the best John Cena angle ever written.

I honestly enjoy the matches with objectives, because they help add something more to the game past just trying to win matches as quickly as possible to move everything along.

Y'know, I really like those, too. They were a nice change of pace that got you to do interesting things in matches. Do they still have those? I haven't played a WWE game's story since SVR 2011.

I didn't play it, but didn't the last original story involve Triple H burying the entire roster?

I would guess they do the flashback modes because creative at WWE was probably tired of being overshadowed.
