I was just thinking, did WWF have any input into how the final Nitro got booked? As they were following on with Booker being champion etc, was that WCW who wanted that or was it Vince who said who would ultimately win depending on who they signed straight away for the Invasion angle (or didn't sign due to the Time Warner contracts).

I wouldn't be surprised if they booked some of it, like Booker T. winning the WCW Championship because they anticipated being able to bring in Booker T immediately, but not Scott Steiner.

I remember seeing some footage of WWE Agents/Producers at that Nitro and some of the guys that were there (Booker/Mysterio) mentioned that they knew something was going to happen when they saw WWE guys backstage. So I wouldn't be surprised if WWE booked that show.
As for the booking on the US/WCW Title match, Booker T has agreed to a WWE buyout of his contract (for much less than he would have made by staying at home and collecting WCW checks), while Steiner would remain on Turner money. So it only made sense for the guy that would be working with WWE to get the titles.

it was probably put through Vince's filter before it went on the air. well, everything except Tony Schiavone burning his bridge.

I never thought WWE booked it. The show was basically a celebration of WCW with the Sting/Flair match and Booker T getting the feel good title win. I think the WWE had little influence on that show other than the segment they did with Shane.

You look at who went home with belts, who was booked strongly, and who went over and then you look at who the WWF picked and it's pretty clear they had some input. Except for Bam Bam vs Stasiak, that was purely for the fans.

In Flair's book, he states that Shane came up to him, and asked him to work against Sting.
It's no coincidence that all the titles ended up on guys who went to WWE right away.

Do you blame them for putting the titles on guys who would end up in WWE?

Do you blame them for putting the titles on guys who would end up in WWE? I don't think this was a question of blame at all, more just curiosity about the nature of that evening.

The other questions that I completely forgot in the original post:
Why didn't they start the Invasion the night after Mania, with the momentum they had from the Vince vs Shane match?
Was Two Man Power Trip planned all along to get the first few months of the wrestling season to themselves before the Invasion began? I love the BOD vs TMPT feud and the video packages with The Fight Song in the background just shows how intense and brilliant that rivalry was. Due to WCW being bought before Mania, they didn't want to alter the original plan of debuting TMPT and putting them against BOD? How did the HHH injury play into it all, and did they still start the Invasion at the time they wanted to (with Booker attacking Austin at KOTR) after the injury, or did things get altered?
And also did they want Shane vs Test/Shane vs Angle to happen first as well?

And also did they want Shane vs Test/Shane vs Angle to happen first as well? the initial plans were to continue the 2 man power trip and use Nitro as a separate brand (if I recall correctly, Monday Night Raw would beome Monday Night Nitro and WWE would all move to Smackdown. yeah wrap your head around that, there was a time when Smackdown was considered "the A show"). but Spike TV saw WCW as a toxic brand and wanted nothing to do with it, plus the Booker T vs. Buff Bagwell match tanked, convincing Vince not to use the name WCW beyond as a bunching bag (and while we all hate it in hindsight, it's hard not to understand Vince's outlook at the time). at the same time Trips suffered his quad tear, preemptively ending the 2 man power trip. so they rushed into the Invasion post-haste, as it was the only thing they could think of to replace the 2 man power trip.

I see, I didn't know about the Spike bit before, and had only heard once or twice (and forgotten) about the WCWMonday and the WWFThursday thing. Thank you! Perfect answer and I get the timeline of it all now.

I like one of the comments on that video: If I was Schiavonne I would have just made shoot comments the entire night, he wasn't getting signed by WWE so what did he have to lose? I'd have loved to have seen him go "That damn Russo caused all this. We're going out of business because of that no talent ass clown!" Imagine if Tony said that live.
