WWE.com: Chris Jericho responds to Triple H

WWE.com have interviewed Chris Jericho about his new web series "But I'm Chris Jericho", the state of the current WWE roster, whether he'll return, and he addresses Triple H's recent comments about him.

WWE.COM: You were mentioned recently on Raw when Triple H dressed down Daniel Bryan and listed the many great, popular wrestlers who, in his opinion, weren’t able to be “the guy,” or the face of WWE. He listed Rob Van Dam, Edge and you. What’s your response to that opinion?

JERICHO: You just said it, it’s his opinion, you know? That’s his opinion, and as somebody that was a six-time World Champion and main evented pay-per-views for years, was I ever the guy? Well, no, but who was? I think if you look over the last 15 years in WWE, you’ve got Rock, Austin, Hogan and Cena. I wasn’t the guy. But I think as far as this B+, A+, C+, F+ ... I don’t even know what that means. I just know that I had great matches pretty much every night. I had great rapport with the fans. I could make them love me or hate me depending on what I wanted, so I don’t know what more you can say.

WWE.COM: So there’s no tension between you two?

JERICHO: The thing is, I really can’t be angry at something like that because it’s his opinion. Some of it might be the show business aspect and some of it may be true. But, like I said, we always had great matches together, so I think Triple H and I are fairly similar as far as where we were in the company. He got a lot of the spotlight put on him, probably more than I did, but if you look at the careers of Jericho and Triple H, we were always the guys who worked with the guy. Ask the fans what they think. That’s the ultimate judge of who was better. In my opinion, Triple H was great, one of the best of all time. But I think I could go toe-to-toe with him in every aspect.

WWE.COM: What are your thoughts on the current roster? Who impresses you, and if you were in Triple H’s position, are there certain Superstars you’d ensure have an opportunity to be in the main event?

JERICHO: There are a lot of guys. It’s an interesting time right now because you’re always waiting for someone to “step up,” and that’s what Daniel Bryan did. I think he proved beyond anybody’s doubts that he can be a top guy and once again, if there’s ever a match between Triple H and Daniel Bryan, I guarantee it’d be one of the best matches Triple H ever had. That’s the type of performer Daniel Bryan is. Sure, he’s “smaller,” even though he’s bigger than the average guy. He’s got long hair, a long beard and is a vegan, but who gives a damn? He’s a great performer. He connects with the crowd.

That’s the most important thing you need as a WWE Superstar: You have to connect with the crowd. If you can’t do that, I don’t care how good a wrestler you are, or how much muscle you have or how cool your hair is. You have to connect with the crowd. The guys who I like are the ones who have that connection.

Yep, and he's right, despite Trips' attempts to re-shape history to make it seem otherwise.

I don't know if this is getting worked into an angle or what, this stuff is just weird. Since it's on WWE.com I'd think so, but it might have just been done so Jericho can get his name back in things and promote his web series.

Or maybe we'll see Jericho be Vince's guy to take on Triple H at Mania, which wouldn't make much sense on Vince's part since in kayfabe H owns Jericho.

I think WWE.com is operated completely separately from the creative process, so I don't think you can read into it as promoting any kind of future storyline or something. WWE.com puts out so much content between the interviews, top 10 lists, etc, I get the sense these are just individual website content producers who come up with this stuff and then get it rubber stamped for publication.

This is very true. But he's giving a very "political" answer while also getting across the point that he sees himself on the same level as Triple H. Ut's also breaking kayfabe in terms of "I can make them love me or hate me" or "we were the guys that worked with the guy". But, he's also bringing kayfabe accomplishments into the works. I guess it's intentionally confusing.

If it was a work in terms of building towards a match or something down the line, I think he'd be more blunt and confrontational about it.

Pretty much. Triple H during the Attitude Era was the 6th or 7th most over guy, tops. I'd rank almost every other main eventer during the time above him;

1st Austin
2nd Rock
3rd Undertaker
4th Kane
5th Foley
6th Jericho (some bias since he was only a couple years during the'Wars)
7th Triple H

He certainly got some big pops, but overall I don't think he was consistently as over as he thinks he was. It didn't help that he seemed to turn heel at times when it ended up hurting his popularity. He still got big, but during his "time on top", it usually ended up being the worst points of his career.

HHH is "the guy", but unfortunately he's "the guy" who sabotages promising angles, buries talent they need to get over, and causes damage to the very company he's going to inherit.

I don't know about your list. I think the seven guys you have there are pretty much the top guys there were, but I'm not sure if I agree with your rankings.

I honestly believe that there was a period in 2000-2001 where HHH might have been the best wrestler in North America (in-ring + mic.) Obviously, I mean pre-quad tear, but I think that there is a bit of a prevailing opinion that HHH has always been overrated and I think that's true to a certain extent.

That being said, I think HHH truly was THE best at one point and that kind of gets lost based on who he is.

HHH has only ever been overrated by the WWE. Everybody else underrates him because it's extremely difficult for people to separate the idea of the Evil HHH who holds everybody down and will own the company someday from HHH the performer. He's been typecast by smarks, to a degree...your mileage may vary as to whether or not they're fair in their appraisal.

However, as I think on it...the WWE doesn't even overrate him as much as they could. By their standards, they're actually extremely restrained. He does have a ton of influence...but they really never treat him like he's Hulk Hogan/Rock/Cena or anybody of that level. He's treated at Undertaker/Shawn Michaels/Bret Hart level. One of the all time greats...but not a worldwide icon.

They could treat him that way if they wanted to. They could do all sorts of crazy things.

I would put Vince in the top 3, bumping HHH even lower.

it's pretty much the unvarnished truth. Trips is a great wrestler but as a fan who watched during the Attitude era, he was never "the man" and when he did try to be "the man" later the ratings and buyrates went into a freefall. always like reading Jericho's thoughts, there's a guy who knows he can say whatever he wants because he doesn't need WWE as much as they need guys like him. and his lack of "I was the best in DIS BUSINESS EVAAR!!1" attitude is a refreshing change from some people.

I guess everybody just assumes that's what HHH thinks about himself, and maybe they're right, but that's kind of the point of the heel character, isn't it? He's got a huge ego but he can't really back it up with facts. Like every other heel ever.
