I've had this idea for a few weeks now and feel it is a solid idea and a way TNA could make itself profitable and relevant in its own way. Most of us agree that the biggest problem TNA has had is it has tried to be just like WWE for the last 6 or 7 years. If both companies were sodas TNA is the Shasta cola to WWE's Coke. It cannot compete or even come close to offering the same style mainstream wrestling product the WWE has. What TNA needs to do is find its own niche, it needs to offer a different style and type of wrestling product, what it needs to be successful is become the Mountain Dew or Sprite of professional wrestling and offer fans a different style of wrestling product or an alternative. But what type of alternative should they offer. What type of wrestling is their a demand for from current or former fans who may come back given the right brand??
I feel the way they could do this is create a southern wrasslin product/promotion. Ever since WCW went out of business(you could even make an argument that WCW became a WWE lite style product once they signed hogan in 1994 but that is another debate)Create a promotion that offers the southern wrasslin style, feuds and characters but updated for 2013. Here are a few ways they could do this.
1. Cater to the S.E.C fanatic(college football conference not government commission), duck dynasty loving crowd who misses old school NWA and WCW . I have talked to numerous wrestling fans who long for something like the old NWA, WCW or UWF to return.
2. Have the promotion only run in smaller venues and only run shows in southern states like Georgia, Carolinas, Tennesee, Texas, Louisiana, Virginia, Florida, Kentucky and a few others.
3. Change the name, call it Southern Championship Wrestling, create an identity and brand.. this was the name of a promotion from 1994 to 2004 i dont think tna would have trouble buying rights to the name.
4. Use characters/talent southerners would like(aj styles, james storm, jeff hardy etc.) or intensely dislike(yankee bully ray, heel christopher daniels)
5.study old nwa, wcw and uwf see what angles and ideas were timeless and work.. use them
6. Hire Jim Cornette and Jim Ross, listen to them, hire young writers, find young talent that would fit this style, brand and promotion
I have more but want to get feedback from others, ideas, suggestions?
