People seem to forget in hindsight, and are blinded by nostalgia, but the truth is, The Rock WAS John Cena in 2002. Before he took off for greener pastures, Rock was stale and trying too hard to be funny on the microphone, despite bringing 1,000% in the ring. Watch him from 1998-2001. Then watch him from 2002 til now. From arrogant and cool, to a pandering, would be comedian.

"Blah blah random food item, blah blah Twitter, blah blah blatant homophobia, blah blah random story with little to no relevance about any given city which probably didn't happen."
There we go, every single Rock promo from his return.

Rock's comeback promo from 2011 couldn't have been any more perfect. That was The Rock, and he was cracking all the right jokes (Fruity Pebbles was originally quite funny, believe it or not). I was so happy to see him back. He still hit a few promos along the way, but the more he was around, the more it felt like a ego-blow session. Taking precious tv time away to randomly talk about crackheads for 20 minutes or whatever it was really changed my views on him. And that's not getting into the birthday Raw. I do like him, I just grew tired of "how can we stretch this out for 6 more weeks...again...while Rock is busy with other things?" Then he'd come back and talk about CM Punk's ballsack or cut some forced hashtag thing and it got super lame.

The first few were great but I remember the ones near the end being rambling, repetitive and going on too long. I think he's one of the all time best at it but even the best have given bad promos. Hogan, Flair, Piper, Punk, Dusty, Austin, they've all had their share of bad promos. No one's exempt.

There were glimmers, the first two promos to Cena in Boston were so much damn fun but, as others have mentioned, they wanted an even playing field between him and Cena which made no sense considering 1. Rock was always going to get cheered over Cena in pretty much every city 'Mania could have been held but expecting it from MIAMI was a leap too far and 2. Both guys are capable of getting a crowd into what they say and when Cena was blowing off what Rock was saying even though Cena wanted him to go that far...why do you want me to root for Cena? More importantly, why do you even want me to be interested if one opponent is not taking the other seriously?

I never found Rock's promos to be that great especially during the attitude era. It was all "I'm going to drive down jabroni avenue to the smackdown hotel and shove things sideways up your ass" and it was the same every week. I do think his promos were better when he came back but nothing special.

It's mindboggling that WWE dedicated, off and on, almost three years of TV and PPV time to have the Rock pass the torch to the guy who has been carrying the torch since 2005. Yes, Cena needs to be over even more. Maybe it'd be tolerable if that TV and PPV time was something actually worthwhile, but it wasn't. And for what? More of the same John Cena show that we've seen before. Hooray.
I can't wait ten years from now when John Cena returns to WWE to put over Bo Dallas if Rock vs. Cena is anything to go by.

I've never really was a fan of the Rock's promos anyway so I didn't see much difference Same, I've always felt that Rock was terrible on the stick.

When Rock and Cena had moments of seemingly being legitimately angry at each other, I thought it was great. I always thought The Rock's best promos were when his character seemed pissed off about something ('Is The Rock down? Hell yeah he's down, but The Rock is HERE'/'Hulk Hogan, The ROCK believed in YOU!'/'You will get the absolute BEST of The Rock') and so with the Cena stuff the times when there actually seemed to be animosity worked the best.
Cena was often the better man, though.
While we're at it, I thought Punk's promos against Rock were dogshit. That 'arms too short to box with God' line had half of this forum swooning, but it came off as lame as anything to me.

I seriously used to think he was a fantastic promo cutter, when he was in his prime and for most of his career he was a damn good promo cutter but my god when he came back to face Cena again, like when he was talking about being the President and all that sort of stuff, I found myself fast forwarding it because they seemed to drag on and on and on (in fairness I fast forward most long promos so it's nothing really against The Rock) But when he came out after the AJ and Bryan wedding, damn I was bored as f*** with him and basically interrupting Bryan and saying that he 'Looked like a troll from Lord Of The Rings', If they just had a pure promo battle with Punk and Rock after Bryan had left I wouldn't have minded it as much but they made Bryan look like a chump. What do you guys think of the Rocks latest run and his most recent promos. The silly part is "Rock is totally lowering himself to make Cena look good" mentality from old Attitude era fans or people who despise John Cena to a ridiculous degree. The Rock has always been ridiculous. The Rock lowering himself, to me, was with the notes on the wrist. Someone who could ad lib as well as him needing notes on his wrist was so painfully manufactured, I'm surprised anyone bought it. Needing notes for one of his Rock Concerts where he has to sing I can understand, but notes for a promo? Come on. If Rock blanked out and forgot where he was during a promo, he'd improvise the entire way.

I thought he was alright. He cut some good ones and some bad ones, same as he always did.

That song he made about Vickie..... I'm not a big Rock fan. I absolutely loved corporate and hollywood(heh, the irony) Rock but current Rock can go f*** himself.

It's not 1999 anymore, that's what happened. The guy's ridiculous schtick wore on me in the early 2000's and he hadn't really changed it one bit when he came back to face Cena. I get it, give the people what they know and love, but it just shined a light on how great the Rock isn't as a character in 2013. As a performer, I'm sure he could have brought something more to the ring (in terms of promos) though.

The rock was great when he was active week in and week out because of the altercations that would happen between promos. He had nothing new to work with during his last run with Cena because nothing really happened in between their promos. All they did was talk about respect and make jokes.
The promos with Punk were a little better than with Cena because they actually had physical altercations to refer to when they feuded.
