I didn't like the Rocks promos when he came back

I seriously used to think he was a fantastic promo cutter, when he was in his prime and for most of his career he was a damn good promo cutter but my god when he came back to face Cena again, like when he was talking about being the President and all that sort of stuff, I found myself fast forwarding it because they seemed to drag on and on and on (in fairness I fast forward most long promos so it's nothing really against The Rock)

But when he came out after the AJ and Bryan wedding, damn I was bored as f*** with him and basically interrupting Bryan and saying that he 'Looked like a troll from Lord Of The Rings', If they just had a pure promo battle with Punk and Rock after Bryan had left I wouldn't have minded it as much but they made Bryan look like a chump.

What do you guys think of the Rocks latest run and his most recent promos.

Some of them were good, him throwing Cena's merch into the sea, the Lance Armstrong line, his first promo after coming back where he memtioned Fruity Pebbles for the first time. Some were good but some (Wrestlemania 27, any time he mentioned twitter) weren't good.

The silly part is "Rock is totally lowering himself to make Cena look good" mentality from old Attitude era fans or people who despise John Cena to a ridiculous degree.

I remember joking in the Attitude era that the Rock would eventually get to the point that he could just come to the ring, hold up a mic, and let the entire audience cut his promo for him in unison.

This run was more of the same, IMO.

Rock won against Cena for me, Cena's responses were shit and I think WWE went out of the way to ignore the "beef" between them and make it about t-shirt colors, because they couldn't really have it look like Cena started it.

The stuff against Punk was awful though.

I know that Rock was the favorite and the majority hated Cena, but Rock should've been the heel. His promos just came off as blatantly burying Cena's character. Rock's entire argument just came off as "you suck because kids like you."

Except that's exactly what happened. I'm not saying Cena couldn't beat him, straight up, but everything from both men was intricately scripted to create an equal ebb and flow because Stephanie loves Twilight and wanted a straight up Edward vs Jacob side-taking battle with the fans. Fans still chose Rock, though, despite all the manufacturing (like the stupid wrist notes thing).

You have to remember that Cena's character embodies the alienation of most of the adult audience (which make up the largest demo overall). Rock, like Punk as well, became their avatar. Cena having kids as fans wasn't the issue; it was that those disenfranchised viewers knew that Cena existed primarily to court children at the expense of being relatable and entertaining. He was one big cartoonish, dorky poster for what they despised WWE had turned into. In the same vein though, Rock was designed to pander to them, so it was all fair in the end. Plus, the adult males got their win first. WM 27 & 28 was drawn on Rock beating Cena. Everything worked out for eve3ryone in the end.

I'm with you. I'm a huge Rock fan, but the build to the 2nd Cena match was pretty lukewarm and not once did I feel Rock truly delivered like I know he's capable of. I cannot recall one promo during that build (from post-Rumble to Mania) that he gave whereas I can distinctly cite others that he's given in the past. Whether he "lost" a step (verbally) in the years away or he was subject to the overly scripted nature of current day WWE, I don't know, but the build to and then the 2nd match itself (which I witnessed live) was extremely lackluster and not a career highlight for either man. In fact, I'd say Rock/Cena II was the worst match on Mania 29's card or maybe they just couldnt follow Punk/Taker. There was just no chemistry.

That said, the build to 27 when Rock was merely hosting was pretty damn great. His first promo back when he attacked Cena verbally for the first time was amazing. Some of the material in the lead up to the first Rock/Cena match was okay, but it never matched the high of that very first time Rock addressed Cena. While Rock has always utilized silly putdowns and catchphrases, the reliance on them in this version of Rock was apparent and not delivered well. I did enjoy some of the Rock Concerts, but even those weren't comparable to the days past. I wonder if maybe he put too much thought into everything instead of letting it naturally come back to him. It will be interesting to see if he ever comes back again. I'm sure we'll see him in some respect, but I really doubt he'll ever come back for another "run".

I'm kind of with you and I'm kind of not. I've never liked the actual content of Rock's promos too much, they've always been silly and ridiculous and too catchphrase-driven. Especially the dumber catchphrases he's tried to get over.

But at the same time, the man is so damn charismatic that even if he's saying really stupid shit(most of the time), I can't help but at least enjoy watching him say it.

The problem is that when it started to make it about something else, then stopped and went back to that, which makes me think that WWE did have something to do with how the feud progressed. It started to be about how Cena accused The Rock of having no passion for the business or the fans and what Rock was really doing. You could have built a feud around that, with Cena challenging him on thinking there was more than WWE, and Rock talking about how Cena is where he is because he couldn't do more.

Instead, it basically just degraded back to "Haha, fruity pebbles, kids like you!" and "I'm here, you're not!" A lot of people either don't remember or don't want to accept that there was more to it at first.

This match happened in the wrong time period for both guys.

If you want Face Rock vs Heel Cena, go with Circa 2000 Rock vs Circa 2003 Cena. You have a pretty damn effective feud there of the star now being pompous and trying to discredit the "legend".

You want Face Cena vs Heel Rock, go with Circa 2004 Cena vs Circa 2003 Rock. Have The Rock come back and proclaim himself as "better" and above Cena and WWE and Cena fight for his and the company's honor.

The Rock's 2011-2013 run was one of the worst things about the last few years. They used WM 27 as a 4 hour commercial for Wrestlemania 28. On top of that, his promos were bad and they tried to split an audience that frankly favored Rock 80 percent. Not any point and time during that feud did it feel like Cena was a face. Hell, the mark in me feels dirty at the end of WM 29 with Cena going over. On top of that it derailed CM Punk's push.

The Rock's return is why you need to at least wrestle a few matches before going out there. I know he had the tag match between him and Cena against Awesome Truth but he needed to wrestle at least a few more between that and Mania to be in wrestling shape. He just looked winded in all of his matches and it ruined the effect. He hadn't wrestled a singles match in 9 years by the time Mania hit and it showed. I'm glad he's gone and while I wouldn't mind him returning down the road, I would rather he be in shape and wrestling on a somewhat consistent basis instead of the crap we had to sit through for 2 years.

I wish I had tuned out earlier, awful, awful stuff.

When Rocky first turned into the Rock, he was gold on the mic. At a certain point, he realized he didn't have to put any effort into it and the crowd would love him just as much.

Why try harder?

He went from always talking about shoving things up men's asses to talking 100 mph like his Folger's was laced with cocaine to saying any nonsensical thing and getting the same reaction.

I thought his first promo was pretty good, but I lost it when he delivered an insult, said it would immediately trend on Twitter, & waited for the crowd to get it done/cheer when it happened.
