from our good friend "urban dictionary"
================================ gringo If you know any mexican people then you'll know this is a non-derogatory term used to refer to US citizens. Mostly because the term "American" does not make sense to the rest of the Americans (all those people who live in the continent named "America", wich is every body from Alaska to argentina), and the word "Estadounidense" (UnitedStatean)is too long.
Folklore says it was generated when the US invaded mexico, wearing green uniforms, and the people shouted at them "Green Go Home".
With time it lost all derogatory status and was turned into the most common word to refer to any US citizen.

Gringo is not really derogative and is used very commonly in some countries (like Peru) but it clearly has a racial tone. In south america a gringo is not only a north american person, it's a white stranger guy in general (north american, european, australian). But south american people do not care about politically correct as much as we do, as they very commonly call themselves out "negrito - chino - flacco - gordito" etc...so in their mouth it's not derogative 90% of the time.

I see I misinterpreted it (there's another word that insults hispanics, but it's irrelevant), but really? WWE doesn't care? What if Wade Barrett used some British slang or something? I always thought that "gringo" was a very bad term that could barely be used on TV. Pretty sure Wade and several other British wrestlers have used and continue to occasionally use the word "Yanks" to describe Americans. Same basic thing. And Desmond Wolfe used to get away with calling people "Wanker", which always amused me. Anyway, Del Rio was calling everyone Gringo throughout the whole match, so it was just JBL siding with the heel. I never thought of it as an inherently racist term, just a catch-all term Mexicans use for foreigners.

So during the 6-man tag team match on Raw as the big cluster finish began, I believe that JBL used the word "gringo" on commentary as two guys went over the top rope (Cody and Sandow?). Now, I know that no one in the match was hispanic (Del Rio was at ringside, though), and really, it's not that bad as it sounded kind of passive, but doesn't WWE usually get up in people's rears over this stuff? Anyone else hear it? EDIT: "Gringo" is a Spanish word used to insult white people, sorry for the error.

When I worked at Casa Bonita (though that was 20 years ago...wow time flies) we had a section on the menu that was called something like "For the Gringos" (20 years and things that Colorado is, uh, famous for later have blurred what it exactly was).

Gringo - WikipediaSo, there you have it. Roger Axtell's settled the debate. As much as I'd like for gringo to be considered offensive so I could throw a little hissy fit, or even better, point out the idiotic double-standards of society when JBL goes unpunished, this isn't the case.

I'm Hispanic. 'Gringo' is not racist, but it can be used in a snide way amongst Mexicans when referring to Americans...i.e., "Those damn smelly Gringos!" or "Stupid Gringos". Pretty much like how you can turn any other qualifier into an insult by adding something negative to it (i.e. "That stupid Southerner!")

To be fair 3/4 of the thread is saying that exact same thing, and the opening poster apologised for misreading the context of the line/term when JBL said it, so I don't think anyone in here's thrown a hissy fit. If it is a hissy fit then I wish all hissy fits were this cordial and full of humour.

I didn't mean the people in this thread throwing a hissy fit, I meant people in threads where basically any class of people other than whites are being insulted. That's why I pointed out the double-standards.

While that sounds about right, I don't think you should take the opinion of a "travel etiquette expert" too seriously either.
What exactly is that? =P
I'm just picturing some guy that's "been around and seen some things, mannnnnn"
