I was watching early 1985 episodes of Worldwide Wrestling, and one of the big feuds going on was Don Kernodle vs the Russians. Kernodle was not a big enough star for them to star in a feud with the Russians who were one of the big time heel tag teams they had going, they were grooming Nikita to have a run with Ric Flair for the World title, Ivan Koloff former World champion, they feuding with people like Dusty Rhodes, Magnam TA. the Road Warriors, and Don Kernodle, one of them is not like the other.
Anyway Kernodle didn't have a regular tag team partner, he had his baby face friends like Magnam TA, Dusty, and soon to depart Ricky Steamboat who supported him and said if you ever need him, you can count on me, blah blah, it sounds like they were setting up something, similar to Eddie Gilbert's little feud with the Horsemen in early 89 and we all know what that lead to.
Around this time, because of a dispute with Hasbro and Titan sports left the WWF, and I thought they were trying to lead this to Sgt. Slaugher heroic return to help his old tag team take down these evil russians.
Shortly there after the feud fissled, Kernodle became a mid carder, and the Russians went onto feud with the Road Warriors, Ric Flair, ext.
Anyone know if JCP tried to sign Slaugher at this point, and it didn't work out and he went to the AWA instead?
This Kernolde / Russians feud seemed like an obvious setup for the sarg to return. Remember in 84, Sgt. Slaugher was the second most over babyface in the WWF behind Hogan, so signing him would have a big deal for JCP.

I don't know if that was the plan, but I don't think you could have brought Slaughter to Jim Crockett Promotions in that time frame without him fighting Flair for the gold. I'd argue that Slaughter could have almost been as big a star as Big Dust in JCP if he signed with them. Add Slaughter to the list of Rhodes, the Road Warriors, Magnum, the Rock n' Roll Express, Nikita, Windham, and others battling the Horsemen in 85-86, and that would have definitely added more to the landscape.
Slaughter coming in would have been just as big as someone like Piper or Funk entering the territory. I don't think they could have passed through without meeting Flair.

I am not arguing Sgt. Slaugher in the long term wouldn't have had a run in with Flair. I don't see what one has to do with the other. He wouldn't feud with the Russins forever.
But you do agree the Krondole / Koloffs feud, it would make sense for the sarge to be the one to come in and save the day.

I'd definitely say it would make sense and that it would happen. I just don't see that feud lasting for very long as Sarge would come in with Kernodle, clean house like a boss, and then move on to other things.

For a split second, I wondered what JC Penney wanted with Sgt. Slaughter.
