I can't wait to see what everyone picks. As a player, this is a really fun round. I was on the judge end of it last time. The game is really really fun right now, and I'm glad everyone gets to launch "misfits" at judges instead of comfort-zoning. And I love that this round *is* comfort for so many of us. Like I said, really can't wait for everyone's take on the round. Love the variety.

After narrowly avoiding Elimination, their hopes and dreams preserved from danger much like a ship saved from crashing into rocks by a wind from Providence itself, Gus Richlen and Knailsic Loves to Boggie started a rather neat friendship. To the Final Two, they would toast. Onward to the Finale was their motto. They would meet amidst the hallways in the Freakin' Awesome Network and exchange exaggerated pleasantries:

Gus Richlen, Inuyasha Mark (enormous grin on his face, opening the door to the FAN cafeteria for his friend): After you, Mr. Save!
Knailsic Loves to Boogie, returning the acknowledgment: No, No! After you, Mr. Safe from Elimination!
Gus Richlen, Inuyasha Mark (an even larger grin stretched across his face): Oh, I insist... Knailsic Loves to Save!!!

Ho Ho, Ha Ha, they would laugh. They became Besties.


Not everyone was happy with this new development. '



Roxie Daggers, formerly Gretchen Weiners, now Cher Horowitz (seeing the Gus and 'Sic Connection go into the FAN cafeteria line): (rolling her eyes): As if! Uggg! (looks at Pegasus Warrior, who's calmly listening to Gregorian chants on his Ipod). I can't believe you're so calm! They just.. the rage... the rage! (looks down at her tray, a veritable aftermath of crumpled up candy bar wrappers and Jack Rabbit Slim brand cheeseburgers and onion rings) I feel like such a heifer. I had 3 cheeseburgers, 3 pieces of turkey bacon, a handful of popcorn, 5 peanut butter M&M's and like 3 onion rings. (Looks at the Gus and 'Sic Connection laughing and exchanging back and forth a briefcase with the words "THE SAVE" written on the front). I can't believe they got the Save!

Pegasus Warrior, listening to weird warbling throat music: Right. Turkey Bacon. It's good for you.

Cher Horowitz: Sigh. (Dawning on her) OH MY GOSH! WHAT... WHAT IF... IT'S ME AND YOU IN THE SING-OFF!?!
(turning to Pegasus Warrior, Cher's lower lip quivered ever so slightly)

Knailsic and Gus sat down at a cafeteria table near Cher and Pegasus, Gus eating a soft-shell crab sandwich with homemade potato chips, Knailsic drinking yoo-hoo and having a falafel salad:



Knailsic, pointing to the Save briefcase in Gus's hand: Hey buddy, let's get a look at that Save again!
Gus Richlen, Inuyasha Mark: Oh sure, pal o' mine! It is quite a handsome document. (Takes out a cream colored sheet of paper with a blue and gold ribbon sporting the FAN insignia) Look, even though it's blank, one can imagine the words "Knailsic Loves to Boggie is Saved" scrawled dramatically upon it.

Cher (ears perking up and listening to Knailsic and Gus squabbling about who was actually Saved, turning to Pegasus Warrior): So okay, I don't want to be a traitor to my Season and all but I don't get how you guys pick music. I mean, come on, it sounds like Knailsic just falls out of bed and put on some baggy pants and take out his vinyl collection - ew - and cover his hair with a backwards cap and like, the judges are expected to swoon? I don't think so.

Pegasus Warrior: I don't pick my music in that fashion. Why-

Cher (interrupting): Yeah, yeah, you get all calm and stuff and listen to your chanting monks and-

Knailsic and Gus start arguing over who was Saved and who would've been eliminated had the Save not been evoked. Then they talked about who would be the Special Guest on who's Record and how so and so couldn't get studio time with J unless they had the other one's help. Knailsic was a punk, Gus was a metalhead, and that stupid Tyger was the cause of all this.

Meanwhile, suave started to play on his acoustic guitar, drawing a bevy of Idol groupies to his own cafeteria table, a particularly tall and comely lass feeding him grapes. Suave made her a cute little bird out of folded paper and then they left to go see the latest Kash Flag movie.


Pegasus Warrior (humming to himself): Calm. Calm. Calm. The music is on the wind.

Cher:... ok you hippie. You and your calmness. (Looking down at Pegasus Warrior's lunch) The hell?

Pegasus Warrior: Oh. Well, we all get angry sometimes, right? I just choose more productive avenues to express my anger than you do with your scowling and daggers. Like food.


As Knailsic and Gus had to be led out of the FAN cafeteria due to how loud their arguing got, Orangeutang was quite sad after being told that the FAN kitchen ran out of bananas. Poor Orangeutang, such are the sacrifices one must make if one transforms oneself into an ape for science.

And here are the songs for Round 36: Mood Ring. Among the songs selected for this Round is a song from Bob Dylan; talking to the contestant, I ruled that the earlier Bob Dylan song used for the remix round would more correctly fall under the label of the remixer, in terms of the one artist, one song rule.

The winner of Round 36 will have the option of choosing one genre from among the ten underrepresented musical genres listed for Round 37: The Return of the Island of Misfit Genres and making it a requirement for all contestants to select a song to represent that genre among the four songs they are to choose.

2 sets of Judge's Rankings are in for Round 36: Mood Ring.

4 out of 6 quartets of songs are in for Round 37: The Return of the Island of Misfit Genres. Remember, if Round 36's winner decides to use the Round Advantage and make it mandatory for each contestant to send in one song from a genre of his or her choice from the list of ten genres provide, every contestant must have one song representing that song among their picks. I still recommend sending in all four songs you want to use as it ensures that you claim that artist for the round.

I thought about it a bit and figured that, if Round 36's winner decides against making one genre mandatory for each contestant, then he or she effective doesn't gain an advantage.

So, if one chooses against making a genre mandatory, he or she can chose an additional song instead, provided that it represents a fifth genre. So, that player can send in five songs instead, choosing five different genres, instead of making one genre mandatory.

In Sixth place, with a grand total of 101 points, is a contestant who shouldn't be gloomy despite their placing. Time to take that anger inside and sublimate it into some amazing music...

Cher Horowitz!!! who opened our third eyes with the blissful mysticism of Three Dog Night's cover of Shambala (41 pts, 12th), made the hair stand on the back of our necks with Jen Titus's cover of the traditional folk song O Death for the television show Supernatural (22 pts, 14th), and played a somber dirge on the wind with Arcade Fire's sad Cold Wind (38 pts, 14th)!!!

With 114 points and sewing up 5th place is a contestant who can be quite frightening and unpredictable with their music. Let's hope that we continue to see musical risks that gives us the shivers from...

Okay, I think this may be a first, but did Waffel and I have the exact same rankings for this round? ...That's a little creepy.

Also, since I'm sure you're wondering about some of my scores, here's how I justified them all. Hopefully this will give you guys some insight into how I judge music. Admittedly this is my first time doing so like this.

Tier 1: Loved Em.

Like a Rolling Stone- Bob Dylan (Sentimental) This one I feels just flows great. All the instruments gel well with the lyrics in my opinion. Plus the harmonica interpersed throughout really helps it stand out, although I will admit it did feel a little odd how seldom it showed up. Still definitely my top pick for the round thus far. Guess there's a reason this guy is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. Also interesting to note this was the longest song of the bunch, and it grabbed my top spot. If I had to say one negative, the ending did feel a little abrupt how it just faded out at the end, but that's nowhere near enough to knock it out of my top spot.

Only Love Can Break a Heart- Gene Pitney (Melancholic, Romantic, Emotional) Gene Pitney is a weird name. That aside, I love how serene this one sounds. It's one of those tunes that helps you relax and unwind. Also I think the back-up vocals really help things as well. Honestly I can't say much else about it. It's just the type of song that puts a smile on my face. The length worked to its advantage too since I imagine it might have gotten a little repetitive if things had gone on for too long. Not the best of the round, but definitely near the top.

All My Life- K-Ci & Jojo (Romantic) Another song I actually recognize. I've heard it a few times, and it's definitely one that's stood out in mind. (Though I'll admit I never knew who performed it or the name up until just now.) One of the better songs of the round though, I think. Probably the best song vocally of the round. While it's light on instrumentation, that's not always a detriment. Sometimes singing is more then enough to carry a song for me, and this is one such example. Definitely ranks pretty high up there for me this round. Though like many songs it just seems to kind of end. Ah well.

Tier 2: Good Stuff.

Cecilia- Stomp, Paul Simon, and Jimmy Fallon (Melancholic/Sad, Happy/Cheerful) It's hard to go wrong with any song that utilizes a combination of rhythmic clapping and drums. I love songs that mix things up like that. As for the song itself it just had a really nice beat to it and, like many others on this list, everything just works for me. So as odd it is, a song featuring Jimmy Fallon (apparently) ranked up pretty high for me. Like the rest of my top tier, this one just stands out, which puts it above the others for me. Except for the song at the very bottom... but we'll get to that soon enough.

Bittersweet- Hoodoo Gurus (Sentimental) I do like the opening riff at the start and how it builds up to things. I'd say this was one of the better songs of the round for me. Again, I love me some solid guitar work, and this fits that bill pretty well. Not much else to say here, but a fine pick.

Cold Wind- The Arcade Fire (Sad) Definitely has a somber tone to it. I'll admit the start didn't blow me away, but it definitely picked up towards the half-way point.I liked the song, but I have to say it to took a little while to get going. So all in all a solid choice.

Night Like This- LP (Melancholic) First off we have "doo doo doo doos" in a song. This is usually a red flag for me. Beyond that this song is actually not too bad. The singing and the instruments work pretty well together. Still I just don't like filler lyrics. And the song really doesn't need it, I think. All in all I do like the song, but a few things drag it down for me out of top contention.

Branded- Rose Tattoo (Angry, Defiant) I just like the sound of this one for whatever reason. Definitely feels more a defiant song then angry, but there's definitely some of that in it too. Good songs are hard to describe, I suppose, and this one such example. It's easier to critique something for its negative points then the positives. Maybe that's just because I'm not experienced in critiquing stuff like this though. I guess it is a little repetitive at times, but aside from that I can't think of much wrong.

Tier 3: Solid!

Dragula- Rob Zombie (Scary, Aggressive) I'm not a big fan of Rob Zombie, I'll admit, but this is a pretty good song from him. Definitely the first one that comes to mind when I think of him. I've heard it a fair few times and it's always stood out for whatever reason.I think it's mainly the heavy guitar, which definitely makes me feel like headbanging when I hear it. Not much else I really have to say about this one, I admit. Though this is yet another thing this round with an abrupt ending. Quite the trend here.

I Melt With You- Modern English (Relaxing/Contemplative, Romantic/Sensual, Scary/Eerie) This is quite the song. While the lyrics seem a little... off-kilter at times, the tune itself definitely sounds a little more upbeat, at least in my opinion. But for this song it kind of works. Speaking of which, the instrumentation in this one works pretty well together, I have to say. I've also heard this song somewhere before... but I can't place where.

Shambala- Three Dog Night (Happy) If I could describe this song with one word it would be adequate. It's decent enough, I suppose. It definitely has a good beat to it, and it hits the mood it's going for, but there are so many better songs on this list in my book. So I'm afraid this one isn't going to place very high on my personal list. Again, I don't hate it, but I doubt I'll ever listen to it again.

Break My Stride- Matthew Wilder (Happy/Cheerful) What a weird song this is. The synth at the start sounds like it belongs in an entirely different song. It sounds almost discordant compared to the tone of the rest of the song. But from there it definitely picks up. Still, while the lyrics seem upbeat, the song itself just sounds kind of bizarre. It does stand out though so I guess it's got that going for it. All in all it's a solid song, but it never reaches that level for me that sets it apart from the rest.

Tier 4: Eh, that was OK.

Adam’s Song- Blink-182 (Sad) Oh look, a song I've heard before. This one didn't really blow me away. The guitar wasn't too bad and I liked the piano towards the end, but there's nothing here that really stands out for me. I will admit though that this was a interesting choice. The tone of the song isn't what you'd expect from your typical sad song. Still, it seems a little subdued for my tastes. Maybe it's just me. Then again Blink 182 has always been one of those bands that are just there for me from what I've heard from them.

Can’t Cry Anymore- Sheryl Crow (Melancholic/Sad, Defiant/Rebellious) I guess this song is alright. But for whatever reason it just seems kind of eh to me. There's nothing here that really makes me want to keep listening. Sheryl Crow is yet another artist that has never done anything for me, I'll admit. I will admit I like the tone of the song, but other than that this was one is just there for me.

Tutti Frutti- Little Richard (Happy) Honestly I'm not surprised this song showed up. I guess I don't have a problem with it. I mean if it's good enough for Mean Gene then it's good enough for me. But it's also one of those songs that I can only listen to every once in awhile before it starts to get obnoxious. There's a reason it's as iconic is it, but aside from the tune itself it's never really been one of those songs I've personally enjoyed. Also, it seems like too much of an easy pick for a round like this. Sorry, but you won't be very happy about where this one lands.

O Death- Jen Titus (Eerie) Well, I like how menacing the start was with the ominous humming. And the singing wasn't bad. Unfortunately there's not much to this one. It's not terrible, but it was just underwhelming for me. And it just seemed to end. Not a big fan of that, I'll admit. Still, I guess it nailed what it was going for, but there were so many better songs this round that I have to knock this down to the bottom tier.

Where Did You Sleep Last Night? - Lead Belly (Eerie) Definitely has an old timey sort of sound to it. It's a pretty simple sounding song, that's for sure, but it's a little repetitive for my tastes. And it literally goes nowhere. Just the same tune over and over. I guess that was probably not unusual back in the day, but it just doesn't work nowadays. I guess it was more about the lyrics, but even those aren't that great in my book. Honestly it reminds me of one of those weird bluesy songs that Bryan Alvarez would always play at the start of the Bryan and Vinny Show. Here though... it just leaves me feeling empty. Kind of like this song. Not terrible, but against everything else in the round... I can't place it very high, I'm afraid. Though if there's one positive, Lead Belly is a great name for an artist.

Tier 5: My Ears are Bleeding.

Nazi Punks f*** Off- Dead Kennedys (Angry) I get what you were going for, I really do, but this song hurts to listen to. I can barely understand the lyrics and it just feels like I'm being assaulted by a wall of sound, and I don't care for it. It doesn't even sound that angry in my opinion aside from F-bombs being flung all over the place. I will admit it was ballsy to submit a one minute song, but that one minute was painful. So yeah, a big fat goosestepping egg for this one. Gonna be hard to top this one for last place
