FAN Idol IX: Thread 2: Round 46: Finale Winner Revealed!!!

Just as a heads up I most likely won't be able to judge the next few rounds. My brother and I are going on vacation starting tomorrow and lasting until next Wednesday. So my internet access may be a tad limited.

I'll probably still listen to the songs for the round though. Because you people do provide some very diverse and interesting playlists.

It's about time to announce Round 39's theme.

So, as potential FAN Idols, a lot is expected from you five talented contestants. Some of it is quite flattering. Some of it is quite humbling. All of it is part of...


Round 39: Another Day in the Life of...

Pick 4 Songs, one per scene, that would be appropriate for 4 of the following 8 scenes that reflect what a FAN Idol can be expected to do each and every day:

1. The five remaining Idol contestants somehow dragging themselves from their beds and into the FAN radio station studio. "Hi out there in FAN Land!!! This is DJ Master Waffle givin' you your eggs and bacon to get your day off to a great start!!! This morning, we have those crazy kids duking it out here on the airwaves before heading out to the main stage for Round 38!!!" (Addresses the five remaining wold-be Idol contestants, Pegasus Warrior sharpening a spear, Gus Richlen sharpening his disdain) "I've been trying to get you monkeys on this show all Season long! The FANs keep e-mailing me, tweeting me, spamming my facebook page, sending homing pigeons to the Waffle House and lighting up the telegraphs. And one question keeps coming up from the folks out there in radio land (Turns to the contestants, suave sneaking back from trying to hit on a young FAN intern): What was the song that you first heard that made you go 'OMG, I have to be a musician!"

2. Talk about a tough question! Mr. Waffle is know for pulling no punches when it comes to celebrities, as seen with his recent special "Dave Bautista: Guardians Hold No Grudges" and he didn't leave the five Idol contestants off the hook. Still, they survived. Now, on a sound stage at the Jimmy Hart Megaphonia, the talented five find themselves in a whole new entertainment jungle: a kid's show! Hosted by the Itsty Bitsy Spiderfab4, weaving tales of daring do and singing songs to delight the child in us all, the Idols find themselves surrounded by little kids screaming at the top of their lungs at animal costumed musicians and a giant Mark Henry dressed up as a train conductor. Smiling flowers, laughing suns, enough puppets to give Cher Horowitz the hee-bee jee-bees. And, as part of Season IX, you are the special musical guests!!! So, surrounded by a bunch of hyper kids and slightly sinister moppets, what song would you perform to entertain the kiddies in the studio and those watching at home all around the world?

3. Heh, those kids were so much fun! And (hiding a stolen moppet) Orangeutan couldn't stop talking about how cool those moppets were. There was one dressed up like a skeleton! That might have been a little spooky but nowhere near as scary as what was next on the agenda: the second FAN Idol Season IX Magazine Photo shoot! Legendary WWF Superstar Rick "The Model" Martel again lent his fashion stylings to the proceedings, dressing Gus Richlen in a yellow frogman wet suit and Cher Horowitz in an intricate leather jump suit that the Model kept referring to as "Ze Mars Dress!". Suave was attired in, to quote Mr. Martel, "How you say? Egyptian Matador haute couture" and Pegasus Warrior and Orangeutang painted a giant Purple Star on an enormous canvass. Throughout the bizarre Magazine Photo shoot, what strange high concept song is playing to match Monsieur Martel's strange artistic idiosyncrasies?

4. As potential future FAN Idols, contestants sometimes have to do things for the Freakin' Awesome Network. FAN runs contests all the time to reach out to potential new markets. We have to get our good name out there and help spread the word on just how great this place is. So, sometimes we set up little contests for local schools, charities, community centers and the like. In this case, we ran a promotional contest "Idolize Your Prom!" and, wouldn't you know it, one lucky young FAN won with the coolest FAN Idol diorama of a Brodus Clay dressed Cageking dancing around on a prom floor. It's up to you five to make this the ginchiest prom ever! Go out there and lead those crazy teenagers in dancing, singing, and getting down. Will Pegasus Warrior become Prom King? Will Orangeutang get into a fight with the quarterback of the FAN Football team out back near Principle Ric's car? And what song will you play to make this prom extra special for these great kids?


5. Uh Oh! Someone must have spiked that punch! Did fw91 show up and try to add to the shenanigans with some of his patented moonshine? Maybe but, regardless, you're all drunk as hell! You stumble around but since you're all on the path of megastardom, any on-lookers take it in stride. The five of you find yourself in Jackrabbit Slim's Bunny hole, possibly the roughest, toughest dive bar in the county. Cher Horowitz messed this place up about a month back, so the locals give you some breathing room but more drinking only makes it worse and there isn't a karaoke machine in sight! So, by yourselves, you start singing some drinking songs. Some of them funny, some of them tell crazy stories, but what do you sing that really gets the group to stand up and cheer and buy another round for everyone?


6. So, guys and gals, this sounds a little crazy but I just got a call from NFL Sports...you guys are going to be the Superbowl Half Time Show!!! The glitz and the glamor, the pigskins and Coca-Cola Ads! They expect Pegasus Warrior to bust out some of his old school New Wave dance moves to bring in the soccer moms and who wouldn't feel a touch patriotic with Gus's country music twanging? What a spectacle! Even as we speak, Supersweet is going to ride a donkey with a monkey sidekick in order to catch those Budweiser Clydesdales in one of the biggest advertisement spots of the year! With the eyes of the entertainment world watching your every move and with an impressive dance squad at your whim, what song will you play, amidst the cheering and fireworks, to do justice to the Superbowl half time act? (Oh and for this Round, you cannot use an actual half-time act's live song....)

7. Wow! What a performance! You had Gene Simmons flicking his tongue and shooting a flaming arrow for Orangeutang to catch bare-handed and Stevie Wonder controlling a funky dinosaur hologram with his piano to totally dance with suave! You guys blew the audience's mind with your auto-tuned wizardry and two-step wonderment and they loved it when Cher Horowitz wouldn't give Bruno Mars her telephone number. But, getting out of the Superbowl (since Tyger wouldn't spring for a helicopter or airship) turned out to be a nightmare. First, the final five were packed away in a smelly Van filled with sand, beer and a couple of singapore canes and then that Sandman van got stuck in bumper to bumper traffic! So, bored out of their mind, with a bunch of rowdy FANs fresh from watching the Superbowl and dancing their butts off to the musical act, the Fan contestants decided to help pass the time. So, stuck in traffic, the Fan Idols got out of their crappy van and started to entertain their captive audience. So, fresh off the Superbowl, surrounded by some wonderful fans, what song do you and your FAN Idol buddies play to pass the time on the side of the road?

8. And you're back at the FAN complex. High fives all around to your talented band mates (and rivals), talks about a possible world tour seem to be the topic on the forefront of everyone else's mind after such an amazing day filled with unbelievable musical performances. You laugh a bit, you make small talk, you chime in with your thoughts about the rest of the Season but music is the last thing on your mind. So, once the other contestants say goodbye and hit the road or their FAN complex hotel suite or go off to find out what else the night has to offer, you go off to meet that special someone. You meet him or her at your favorite restaurant, maybe Italian? Maybe a seafood place? At any rate, it's just you two that evening and, maybe, after this Season, it'll just be you two for may years to come. You have some rather important things to talk to him or her about and its been ages since you last met. You go back to their place in order to do so. So, what music does your special someone play to welcome you back after all that time you've spent trying to become FAN Idol?

Sunrise. The first rays of sunlight tease your face and cause you to stir in your sleep.

If you are Orangeutan, you sleep in an orange bedroom provided to you by the Freakin' Awesome Network.



The Orangeutan yawned, woke up and fell out of bed with a simian curse. Stupid ape form, he muttered. Then he dragged a comb across his head and started singing to himself in an airy voice: "Thought you might like to know/I'm the lorry driver man/She's on the run/Down by the river side/Feeding ducks by the afternoon tide/Apples and oranges/Apples and oranges/Apples and oranges." Afterwords, he put on his nicest Orange suit (had to be let in a bit due to his orangutang limbs) and walked downstairs, eager to get to work on the cure needed to return him to his original form after that horrible genetic acci- well, there are too many details to go into it at this moment.

He came down, said hi to Waffel, who was going on hour four of another one of his legendary breakfast fests, making sure the remaining five FAN Idol hopefuls were well fed and happy after a scrumptious morning breakfast. He took one look at the Orangeutan and started making Banana pancakes from scratch:



Wearing his reading glasses, the Orangeutan scribbled away at his notes between bites. Today, he tried to puff himself up, is the day I stop being an Orangutang!!! At the very least, today was the day that the Orangeutan would enjoy a lovely stroll in the FAN Gardens and figure out a song or two to use in the upcoming Rounds of this, FAN Season IX.



The Orangeutan took a light stroll among the almost Impressionistic FAN gardens, noting the dramatic yellows and evocative reds that bobbed in the brisk wind around him. He caught a scent and, a smile spreading across his face, he looked around to make sure no FAN security guards were present and took to the trees to swing around a bit. Underneath a particularly tall tree, the Orangeutan found suave sitting down, guitar in hand, and listening to the birds.



Suave (to his hirsute fellow contestant): You see, that songbird doesn't prepare for a round or try to fit its songs into a theme. It flits around, its feathers catch the air, and, when it hears notes from other birds, it changes its sound to tag along. (plays a few notes in a languid manner)

Orangeutan (noting that the birds chirrupped in response): Do you think they heard your guitar?

Suave:... maybe. I'm not a bird. I mean, I can fly but I don't have wings. Know what I mean?

Orangeutan: (Peeling a banana he snuck away from breakfast) Sort of. I'm an ape and I can swing, so there is that.

Suave: (strumming away) Let's all hope we swing around this game for a bit longer.

As the five remaining would-be Idols awaited the results for Round 38: A Day in the Life Of..., some used the time to relax and reflect on what has occurred this Season and what was to come, while others attempted to add to their musical repertory.



At the FAN Beach, Honolulu, Hawaii:

Cher Horowitz, for example, decided to take a note from her sometime friend/friendly rival, 3-Time Idol Winner Anonymous GM, and try her hand at the ukulele.

Cher (strumming, twang twang): HEE! This is pretty fun. No wonder she was so happy. Maybe I'll get a mask too .

suave (smiling back): Sure, why not? Let's have a song.

Cher (blushing ever so slightly): Oh, ok. Here goes. (Starts playing really fast and violently)
"I'll cut you with my knife/ I'll drag ya around town/ I'll add some spice to your life/ and I'll do it while wearing a gown!"

Cher then stuck out her tongue, said something about "this one's for you Knailsic" and stomped away to the ocean, likely to yell at the fish.

suave yawned, stretched out on a beach chair, and drank some coca-cola from a coconut shell. He took a nap in the summer sun and awoke as the last sun rays danced on his face. Dancing. Hmmm, that gave him an idea. He looked out at the beach again to find Cher Horowitz serenade the waves with her ukulele, her movements light and precise, the notes beautiful and slightly melancholy, a new sound that he had never quite heard before.

Still, club time! Time to wake up the blood.



The Mambo Room, Honolulu.
suave knew the Mambo Room, just like he seemingly knew every club around the world. Under the hot club lights, which made the sweltering Hawaiian night even hotter and the dancing that much more liberating, suave drank complementary glasses of ice water and mambo'd with every available woman in the room.

suave started with the conventional RazzM'Tazz, mimicking the steps the locals used with ease. His motions were smooth and complicated, studied as it were. suave shifted and incorporated steps from the New York Mamba style, "Mambo on 2", switching it up on the second step and turning. The musicians at their instruments slacked their pace when they noticed his dance steps, then quickened when they realized that he was the real deal. suave realized that all eyes were on him and, not so much reveling in this attention as dancing with an easy step much as an old jazzman finds himself in familiar notes, the would-be Idol channeled Perez Prado, inventor of the mambo, and relished in the merging of the music with the free steps that he demonstrated.



He made sure to dance with every woman in the room, young and old, single and married, those on vacation and those from the Island. Each dance helped him reconnect with his own body and the bodies of others, something that he has been neglecting as of late with this Season of FAN Idol. Still, he thought of the current Round with every step, every movement of his partner's hips, every hand hold and embrace. suave lost himself in the music, in the dance, in the heat and the sounds of joy from those around him. In time, the ideas came to him, the music flowed through his blood, and he knew what music he had to use.


Wang Chung's. Honolulu.

Gus Richlen, Inuyasha Mark and the Orangeutan found themselves at the legendary karaoke bar after a night of frantic drinking, Orangeutan enjoying some of the perks of his new simian form (dude, you're totally an orangutang until you change your user name ) by getting complimentary banana daiquiris from bar patrons incredulous at the fact that this orangutang can talk. And, with a little coaxing from Gus, sing.

The two Idol veterans blended in easily with the regulars, Richlen thrilling them with tales of fighting demons from sunless realms and impressing with old folk songs from Meiji-era Japan, while the Orangeutan's novelty spoke for itself. Listening to two nihonjins from Osaka sing Ramones songs, Gus and Orangeutan applauded and whistled, shrugging their shoulders when told that they were next up.



With the eyes of the drunken karaoke goers upon them, Gus Richlen and Orangeutan tip-toed into a blistering roller coaster of a set list: John Legend's All of Me, Lover of the Light by Mumford and Sons, Alabama's Fallin' Again, and a medley of Moonie's greatest hits. The crowd showered them with bananas and coupons for 2 for 1 drink specials.

Gus (eating a fairly unimpressive Salmon Poke, a hawaiian raw fish dish): Bunch of bananas. Well, that was a lot of fun, just hope that my risks pay off. I figured I should use a couple of musicians, have to fit them in somewhere and, hey (looking at a banana near his plate), want this?

The Orangeutan: No no, I'm fine. Can't get that beat out of my head. Bump...Bump...Bump......Bump. That last one sort of hovers there. I like that.

Gus (leaning back, tired and a little tipsy): Love this place. Sigh, I don't want to leave. Why do we have to again?

The Orangeutan: Music. FAN Idol. Tried to convince that goof to finish this thing in Honolulu but he said it wasn't in the budget. We have to get up early tomorrow. Going on a road trip.

Gus: Sigh. Would like to just stay here and relax. Heard suave went dancing. Wouldn't mind checking out that scene.... yeah, yeah, ok! (addressing The Orangeutan) Looks like we're up again.

The Orangeutan: How about Jungle Love?

Gus: Heh. Jungle Love.

At the beach. A few minutes before sunrise.

Road trip time. Pegasus Warrior finished loading up the FAN Van:


Gus, the Orangeutan, and suave were sleeping soundlessly in the back of the Van, Gus and the Orangeutan with a kitschy trophey of a hula dancer with the inscription "Wang Bang" upon it, suave with a woman's shoe near his head.

Pegasus Warrior waved to Cher Horowitz, who played her ukulele the whole night through. She called shotgun, got into the van, and continued to play. Gus stirred a few times, smiled, and fell back asleep. The Orangeutan kept talking about bananas and KISS in his sleep, saying that Peter Criss wasn't a real cat but he was a real orangutan and this damn genetics accident better wear off soon. Pegasus Warrior started the van, put on an Outlaw Country station on Sirius Radio, and drove until daybreak to the next gig, ukulele music in his ears.

And now here are the results of Round 38: A Day in the Life of... The winner will have the option of sending in an additional song for Round 39: Another Day in the Life Of... provided that five categories are represented.

In fifth place, taking to the dance floor with 151 points, is a contestant who has the moves and the swagger to catch your eye from across the room...

The Orangeutan!!! who lost his ego but kept the id, moonwalking with Losing My Ego by throwback rock band ASTRA (56 pts, 7th), did the Monkey with Philip Sayce's The Bull (29 pts, 15th), made our hearts do the samba with Belgian dance group DHT featuring Edmee's cover of Roxette's Listen to Your Heart (48 pts, T-10th), and restored our faith in musical royalty by cha-chaing to the one and the only Cher's mega hit Believe (18 pts, 16th)!!!

No butterflies in the stomach here for the contestant in fourth place. Taking to the stage and belting out the mega hits to a drum beat, with 186 points is...

suave!!! who added pop, soul, rock but apparently not disco to his play list with Everclear's A.M. Radio (63 pts, 6th), who was super friendly to all the the drunk people in the room with Placebo's Pure Morning (48 pts, T-10th), charmed his way through our weak resistance with the Network's cover of the Misfits' b-movie hit Teenagers from Mars (42 pts, 13th), and ended his set with the crowd pleasing Maliblue by former Broadway wunderkind Darius (33 pts, 14th)!!!

Taking home the blue ribbon and 222 outstanding points is a contestant that went on a quest for that special sound, listening to the wind and the rain, the laughter and the clang of metal...

Gus Richlen, Inuyasha Mark!!! who awoke with an urge to smash some heads in with God himself via Motorhead's raucous Hellraiser (44 pts, 12th), sung to himself in the shower with Phil Collin's jazzy take on Cindy Lauper's introspective True Colors (50 pts, 8th), took his eggs and toast and felt blessed with all the songs he was hearing from the Deftones' and their Minerva (49 pts, 9th), and was out the front door and ready to start the day even as the world turned with The Cult's She Sells Sanctuary (79 pts, T-2nd)!!!

Please Step Forward.

You two are the highest scoring contestants for Round 38: A Day in the Life Of.... While we have been chugging along this Season, celebrating the highs and dealing with the lows, the contestant pool has whittled down to just five contestants. Simply put, this is likely the most talented final five in Idol history and any remaining contestant would make a fit FAN Idol. You two have done a marvelous job of setting yourselves up for future success and one will enjoy the crucial advantage of a bonus song for the next Round. Anything can happen but there is a degree of safety to be given to you two, as well as opportunities to take risks, to embrace challenges. Every Round from this point on is of vital importance and one of you has taken the next step to the Finale.

With 261 points and first place, is a contestant that dazzled us with their music and sent us all home happy...

Cher Horowitz!!! Congratulations!!! You wowed us with alt. rock heroes Garbage and their harrowing tale of bad romance with Bad Boyfriend (64 pts, 5th), got us talking by taking a gamble with Canadian rockers April Wine and their Roller (69 pts, T-4th), made the wait for heaven and love worth it with Letters to Cleo's Veda Very Shining (82 pts, 1st), and sent us home happy with the incomparable Mama Cass Elliot's bedtime Dream a Little Dream of Me!!! Well Done!!!

On the fast track to success, in second place with 230 pts, is Pegasus Warrior!!! who started his road trip in a cheap motel room filled with crazy shenanigans with the irascible Butthole Surfer's Who Was in My Room Last Night? (12 pts, 17th), went to the desert and did some acid and found enlightenment with Bleachers' I Wanna Get Better (79 pts, T-2nd), sailed the Seven Seas with Grouplove's Shark Attack (69 pts, T-4th), and went on a journey with a girl, maybe holding hands with Blues Travelers' But Anyway (70 pts, 3rd)!!!

{Spoiler}Losing My Ego- Sounds very much like hair metal to me. Not bad, but unfortunately as I've said before, hair metal isn't my speed.
Who Was In My Room Last Night?- If I had to give an ultra-short, concise response to this song, it'd be a flat "what?".
Hellraiser- My favorite of the songs so far, but I'd hesitate to classify this anywhere above "OK".
Teenagers From Mars- This round continues to be pretty mediocre for me. Again, not that this was a bad song, but nothing that stands out.
I Wanna Get Better- At last, I song I fully enjoy. I can't really figure out what it is I like, but something about this one just works for me.
She Sells Sanctuary- If this round was 100 shares of stock and I had just heard this song, I'd be buying. The needle's slowly pointing up on this set.
The Bull- How do I put this politely? This was not just bad, I thought this was dreadful. To make a bad joke: This was hot [next artist's name here].
Bad Boyfriend- Given little exposure to Garbage prior to this, I was actually kinda blown away by this track. Excellent work on the part of the sender.
Shark Attack- The "Signature Sound" Category bats 1.000. This took a while to get there, but once it did, it was worthwhile.
Roller- Not to be redundant, but this song really does have that "Road Trip" vibe to it. Outside of that, I don't think this song has much going for it.
But Anyway- If we were picking songs in this round like a fantasy draft, this'd be a mid-draft sleeper pick with high-upside potential. Very good, close to great in my opinion.
Minerva- File this with Bad Boyfriend. I wasn't expecting a whole lot (I've had some exposure to Deftones), and this one blew me away.
AM Radio- I love songs like this that establish what they're about from the start (an example from this Season'd be "San Franciscan Nights"). Sometimes a cold open like that can make a great impression, as it did with this one.
Veda Very Shining- Another category manages to bat 1.000 with me. For this one, I don't quite know what it is that I like, but it's a good song regardless.
Listen to Your Heart- The way I see it, if you're the one song in your category, you should be good. Unfortunately, I've never been a dance music guy, much how fw isn't an electronic music guy (hold on, I need to slam my head against a wall again. OOOOWWWWW!).
Believe- A song by Cher, with a user named Cher in the competition. Coincidence? I think...yeah, probably. Using the stock analogy from earlier, if this song were 100 shares, I'd be selling. Don't get the love for this song, and I probably never will.
True Colors- At this stage in the game, it's a bit risky to go for a cover. Luckily, I'm weird. I like Cake's version of "I Will Survive" over Gloria Gaynor's, I like Rush's version of "The Seeker" over The Who's, and I prefer this version of "True Colors" over the original.
Pure Morning- This is suave, I'll bet any sum of money on that (he uses it as the entrance music of his character Lance Action in WWE FAN). Once upon a time you told me not to use this power for evil (IE: Not overrate certain songs based on this), so please understand that isn't what this song's ranking'll mean. I like it on it's own merits.
Maliblue- Hmm...good, but not really something I'd get ready to go to bed to, I don't think. The rules say I reserve the right to rank based on how well I think the song matches the theme of the round, so while this is good, I don't think it fits the theme.
Dream a Little Dream of Me- Now this song, this one I can see myself winding down to. Strangely enough, I don't quite like this song as much as Maliblue, but I feel this song definitely fits the theme better.

I played the theme, and that song worked perfectly to tell "my band's story." Judges are just eyeballing titles and judging. (Heck, I've been there, and that's what I do too.) But as a contestant, I'm playing the game part of it too. Thanks for the props. I had 8 songs last episode to tell the entire story the theme was built on. Dude, I wish I could laid it out all the way to the "time for bed" song. It would've made the Surfers song make so much sense, and in a funny context at that.

I mark for Letters to Cleo taking first. The Cult was a killer backup pick to the original booted pick and glad it fared well too.

A clarification. Apparently some judge(s) read way too much into that. It wasn't a potshot at anyone. What it means is that judges don't judge by the theme and I don't either. You judge the songs. For players, it's different. We play the game aspect of it. So, I wouldn't have chosen Butthole Surfers any other round thus far but this one, because it worked perfectly into the write-up of the theme (which many don't even bother reading). I don't care and didn't care that judges were going to put it near the bottom. I knew that ahead of time. I was playing the game. So that's all I meant by it.
