The person who's clearly to blame is HHH.
Edit: Damnit sunnytaker!

Shelton in Curtis Axels' role would be amazing.

I think he was legit frustrated about Benjamin, personally. Reading between the lines, I think he went to bat for him, and then when Benjamin didn't get over, JR was personally embarrassed. Anyway, wouldn't surprise me if the rumor started because of a game of telephone originating with a JR blog. Because who knew giving someone a momma's boy gimmick was going to fall flat?

I actually remember that rumor. It went like "Shelton is happy and content with his place on the card". Which is actually something I've never heard about any other superstar. On the other hand: Why not? Look what being the top dog is doing to Cena. Any midcarder for life has a secure job, earns a sensible amount of money and has nowhere near as much pressure. Maybe that's just smart.

I maintian to this day that Mama Benjamin was an amazing character, and the only thing that kept Shelton from succeeding with her was her health (and the fact that she clearly bolted when she realized the maniacs she worked for). She'd have been great spun off into a heel authority role.

The first Shelton vs. Triple H match on RAW was the most emotionally invested I have been in a match. When he won it felt like my favorite team winning a playoff game or something. The little "this close" gesture by both guys was cool. It really felt like Benjamin was a huge underdog who pulled off an improbable win.

Remember when it briefly seemed like Shelton may get a match/program with World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger, but instead Shelton was released days later? Holy shit did that piss me off. I've never been a massive Shelton fan. He was a fine athlete, but just wasn't AS good on the mic. It really sucked too, because he was fun to watch. I thought having his mama as his manager was awesome. It's a shame that it was so short lived, because all he needed was a mouthpiece to be the character for him. The gold standard thing...well, it was an improvement. He got slightly better on the mic, but he was still sounded more natural than Swagger did, so when Swagger won the belt, and he made that little "Gold Standard" comment, but Shelton did nothing to counteract it. If Shelton bitch slapped Swagger's goofy face, then proceeded to lay into him, it would have gotten the crowd on his side. Instead, like usual...any wrestler who isn't a blip on the radar has to be treated like a pussy. Makes no sense. There was also his match on Smackdown against The Undertaker where Shelton came across as completely unintimidated by Taker at all. That was kind of cool.

Vince: So you don't want to be a contender for the world title, right?
Shelton: Of course I do, why would you think that?
Vince: It's pretty evident.
Shelton: I work my ass off and put on a great performance every single match. I'm not doing it for nothing, I could just go out there, do the job, and get paid. But I'm striving for more! Where on EARTH would you get an idea that I'm not doing everything I can to move up?
