It's time to settle this. What ruined the Tensai gimmick?

The main thing, to me, would have been the "slow, methodical" wrestling style he adopted. If he just straight-up wrecked people right out of the gate (like Umaga did) he might have gotten a lot more mileage out of the original Lord version of the gimmick.

It was a fat white dude pretending to be some kind of Japanese deity in what looked like a red diaper with tiremarks on his face making "HIYA!!" hand movements and moving at the speed of molasses. I'd say it was destined to fail

Also, I heard your line about "HIY" hadn movements in Doctor Krieger's voice, and laughed.

Probably him pinning Punk and Cena, who were both red hot at the time (interference heavy in both instances, but still notable wins) without any buildup or followup afterwards, leaving fans to think "ok, now what?".

the fact that they didn't just bring him in as Albert from the beginning.

It was us. It was us all along. Austin. Also, I heard your line about "HIY" hadn movements in Doctor Krieger's voice, and laughed. To be fair they all said he was from Polynesia, even if we didn't listen. And Pacific Islanders have practiced sumo. Rikishi was supposed to be like a sumo since Rikishi is a sumo rank and Japanese for strong man.

The boring, methodical style that WWE decided to give him. It was dull.
Oddly... once he stopped getting a huge push, the WWE seemed to relax a bit and actually let him wrestle a more entertaining style his matches became good. Which is exactly the same as what happened with Drew McIntyre actually.

He got to wrestle Punk, Cena, Orton, Sheamus I'm happy.
But the evening gown thing ruined it.
Tensai FTW!!!

As mentioned, the slow, methodical style didn't do him any favors. But one reason that I think didn't help is that they never let him address that he used to be Albert. Yeah, the announce team was saying he wrestled for WWE in the past, but that was it. Hell, they even had Santino bring up that he was Albert. If they had allowed him to say something about it, it may not have completely saved the gimmick, but it would've helped.

He's just not very good. Don't bother bringing up his Japan work, because I'm a huge New Japan guy and I've seen a ton of it. The dude ALWAYS wrestles this slow pace where he clubs people to death and it very rarely works. He comes across as super hokey with his really lame looking offense and cheesy "HI-YAAAAAAAAH" every time he throws a punch. He's the kind of wrestler people who aren't wrestling fans make fun of when they think of wrestling.

I think the cartoonishness of the gimmick is what caused it to fail. If they just brought him in as Albert or A-Train, he would've worked out fine.
He was also booked very badly. If they put him in a feud with, say, Randy Orton, he would've had a great shot to get over. Instead, they just made him Big Johnny's big muscle and didn't put him in any storyline. The most memorable thing he's done in the past year was wear a bra.

Yeah, this along with the goofy karate poses after every move... the entrance robe was pretty bad ass I thought... and the mist claw I could live with.
