Why was the RAW commentary table at one point next to the stage rather than at ringside?

It was an Eric Bishoff idea to remind us of WCW and in order to more distinguish raw and smackdown.

Bischoff was in charge and the idea was he was trying to make things more like Monday Nitro.

Why was the RAW commentary table at one point next to the stage rather than at ringside? Eric Bischoff was the RAW GM at the time and it was meant as a nod to WCW.

WWE didn't have ringside commentary tables until Wrestlemania 7 and even then not for TV tapings until Raw in 1993. Unless you could shows such as those broadcast on the MSG network.

I think it was because Eric Bischoff was in charge and, as a nod to the old days of Nitro, they moved the table to where it was on that show.

Those poor announcers being right next to the damn pyro....
You know, in kayfabe that makes kinda sense since Bischoff hated King and JR, although King sometimes supported him.

Also it made sense when they did dual brand PPV's as they had room for 3 tables that way

I dunno if it's true or not but I think the story is that Eric Bischoff had the idea to distinguish the brands more and because WCW.

I think it was because Eric Bischoff was in charge and wanted the show to resemble Monday Nitro.

Poor King and JR must of absolutely hated Kane's pyro.

I like it to be honest. I think commentators should be reserved from the rest of the action. There's no need for them to sit right by the ring as other than providing the occasional table moment in matches, they watch everything on the monitor anyway. I think the idea of having a special broadcast area in the stands or somewhere makes it seem more legit.
I'd have the match called from where Josh Matthews stands with his bunch of hangers on during PPVs

Guys, I'm pretty sure it was because Kaitlyn turned on AJ and joined the Divas of Doom, but it got edited out of the broadcast.
...I think I'm doing this wrong.

It made sense. Remember Vengeance 2002 where because of only one announce table Tazz and Cole called the first half of the show (including Raw matches) and the switched out with JR and Lawler half way (making comments about the A Team taking over). Having the Raw announce table in another spot meant both teams could call their brands matches and not have to switch places constantly.

I remember as a kid not liking the commentary team so far away from the ring. Whenever they had those instances of being at ringside (WM7, Prime Time matches taped at MSG), I just thought it looked a lot cooler and better.
Plus when I started to get wise to what was going on in wrestling, I realized that a lot of the away-from-ringside commentator were just studio shots that were super-imposed atop the taped action.
