I don't think the fans ever turned on Austin so for me it's Austin.

When has Austin been called the 'greatest professional athlete in the world today' huh?
Hogan's popularity is why the business does what it does today. It's why there are domestic and international TV shows, overseas tours, PPV, merchandise and everything that financially the the corner stone of the company.
Then in the mid 1990s he became the main reason behind the boom. The ratings wars, the increased PPVs. Whether you're talking exposure, coverage or being the catalyst for the industry today as we know it, even though he was by no means alone, in terms of assigning credit to any superstar - it's Hulk Hogan.

Everything you can credit Hogan with though there you could credit Bruno with. Frankly this is just an opinion poll. If Bruno hadn't filled the Garden so consistently and made Vince so much cash he couldn't have gone national and he couldn't have snagged up Hogan. And even after he had Hogan he was begging Bruno to stick around because he wasn't sure Hogan had long term appeal. There were no PPVs in Bruno's era but he was covered in the media as much as Hogan if not more because of the different media. The differences being Hogan came in during an era of media saturation and cable tv. The other big difference is most people who remember Bruno's heyday are gone and those left probably don't spend nearly as much time on the interwebs discussing his impact on the business as the generation who grew up on Hogan. And then you can later credit Austin with as much. If he hadn't have hit big would we have had the attitude boom? Would WWE have collapsed before WCW got their plug inevitably pulled? Because of Austin we can debate who's the current face and because of Hogan we can debate if Austin or Rock were bigger and because of Bruno we can mention Hogan.

But Bruno wasn't there in the global television age of wrestling so that's a different kettle of fish. Could he have been as successful? Maybe. I'd doubt it but maybe but Hogan transcended the medium better than anyone could have because of a number of different reasons.

I'd doubt it but maybe but Hogan transcended the medium better than anyone could have because of a number of different reasons. ...and Hogan never had his match results in box scores of national newspapers or broadcast across the radio. Different medias were dominant at the times. And all those reasons Hogan transcended wrestling in the TV age applied to Bruno, there is a reason why Arnold inducted him. And someday someone will probably try to point out that Hogan never had the internet saturation and controversy Cena had even during his NWO days. Like I said this is just an opinion poll and anybody can find a reason to justify their choice.

If anyone thinks it was someone other than Hogan, you didn't watch wrestling in the 80s.
Austin and Rock are a DISTANT second and third.
I don't even like Hogan, but this really isn't a conversation.

Hulk Hogan, no question. I love Austin, but he's the face of an era--not the timeless face of the company.

1. Hogan 2. Austin 3. Bret 4. Rock
In that order. I put Bret over Rock because I always felt The Rock was overrated as a face. He always was better as a heel to me. He was extremely popular, but I just think Bret was truly a better face.
