Colt talked about it a bit on the AOW with Steve Austin. He recorded the intro before he went, saying it was his third tryout, and he hoped that being open about going would work out for him, as most keep it a secret out of fear it will hurt being signed.
I remember a couple of years ago when Diva Dirt jumping the gun on reporting Paige signing. That news getting out almost cost her the contract completely, so public info on contracts/tryouts can be a minefield.

Story I've always heard is they love him as an announcer and wanted him in that role as far back as his time in FCW, just Colt didn't want that and it is what lead to his job run and firing. Now he still has supporters but with all the turn over they want him to prove himself again. Them bring him in multiple times (I think this is like the third time) shows they at least have some interest, they wouldn't waste their time and money otherwise. Only enough interest to give him a look out of courtesy. If they saw him as any kind of star, I don't think they'd need to have him go through all these tryouts to "prove himself". I put zero stock in WWE's judgment for "seeing stars". They after all hired Steve Austin originally as only a utility guy, had to be talked into Mick Foley by Jim Ross, thought CM Punk and Daniel Bryan were too small and indy, and thought , even if it was for a brief moment, of debuting Undertaker in a giant egg. The more years pass, and the more hindsight we get, the more I realize that Vince McMahon is the world's greatest accidental millionaire. He luckily stumbles onto things that work in 9/10 cases, but then has the good sense to ride them out.

If they're hoping to get another colour commentator, I'd rather WWE use someone who has actually had a WWE career so they can offer insight into things like what it's like to compete at 'Mania, how gruelling ladder matches are, how much of an ass Miz is etc.
What's Colt Cabana going to talk about? That time he cut a promo pretending to be trapped in a box?

Colts smart and talented to enough to work within whatever rules they give him
