We all know what that phrase means and has meant for years in WWE terms. Surely they'd have been aware of that at the time of initiating the saying/group. Why not 'True Americans' or something. I cannot imagine WWE creative came up with 'Real American' without being fully aware of the link to the obvious.

For some reason, I doubt they put that much thought into it.

Probably just a little nod to Hogan like Santino and Gorilla But the Marella thing is pretty inside in regards to an homage. I'll bet lots of fans currently don't even know Gorilla's real name (or even remember him - those bastards). If you say the phrase "Real American" to even a non-wrestling fan, chances are they might link that to Hogan rather easily.

It would be awesome if Hogan returned and pledged his support for them.

I think it's also just that "real Americans" is actually a turn of phrase that gets thrown around in the sort of circles the gimmick is supposed to emulating. "Stealing jobs from real Americans", for instance. Never heard anyone say "true Americans".

I think this is true, but I'm also sure they consciously picked that name because it has wrestling connotations as well.

Right; that and the clear anti-immigrant rhetoric (especially in the Del Rio feud) was pretty blatantly what they were trying to ape from.
