What wrestler would want January through August off? You have WrestleMania season, MITB, SummerSlam, warm weather, no football to compete against, and if you get injured in the spring or summer there's a good chance you'll be back in time for Mania season again.
So really you're just talking about September through December. Maybe the WWE Network will allow them to be a bit more flexible though.

I think there already are some de facto off periods in WWE. Let's face it, the post WM dead zone up until the Summerslam build is more or less down time and would be a nice time to rest some guys. Right now I'd say this is a dead zone, that Fall/Winter time right before the Rumble. Survivor Series used to be a bigger PPV than it is now, but since WWE doesn't care about actually doing well built survivor matches anymore they may as well rest some guys.

Really, having Wrestlemania and then giving the guys and gals the rest of April off wouldn't be a bad thing...it gives you 4 whole weeks to come up with some great ideas to lead you to SummerSlam, it gives everyone a chance to take a break after a big show and come back rejuvenated, it gives WWE an opportunity to hype up the first show since Wrestlemania with a title match on Raw, etc.
Plus, you could prepare special hype shows for 4 weeks showcasing the best moments and matches from the past year, and you could give NXT guys some spotlight during this time. Their ratings would drop some for sure, but I think the benefits outweigh the negatives. Having a full month off would make for happier employees who would be less likely to get burned out when they can't find time to do anything they like outside of WWE's bubble. Though that seems to be what WWE likes...

WWE takes off for X months ---> TNA starts promoting like crazy that they're the only wrestling on tv during those months That's essentially what would happen If a tree falls in an empty forest does anybody really hear it?

There isn't really a need for an off season, if they extended the roster and actually rotated the roster more instead of relying on the old work horses

I could see a 3 weeks off season after Summerslam or maybe after a mid december big PPV ala Starrcade. Basically during this time they could do recap programs of what happened during the year and show vignettes of wrestler on vacation or prepairing for their return etc.

I'd love to see a month off after Mania and a month off after SummerSlam, but I don't think it'd improve business. If WWE continue to book garbage it won't matter how much time off they have. It's the system of second-guessing and safe-bets that really suck. Anyway, I'd ride the boom of house shows after Mania (I'd assume their most lucrative time of the year), and so after Backlash, do double tapings (RAW and SD on Monday, next week's RAW & SD on Tuesday), cancel May house shows, do double tapings again in a fortnight, and just come back for the May PPV.

I'm of the mindset that you still always do TV but could definitely scale back houseshows in the winter months.
