I've been re-watching some of the early Starrcade main events lately and all I can think is thank God the 1983 main event was awesome. The 1984 Flair/Dusty match SUCKED with it being stopped early because Dusty was "injured." The following year was better, but that match resulted in probably the first after Dusty finish since at the next NWA show, the decision was altered and took away the title change that had happened.
As much as some of us like to say old school wrestling was so much better than today, it is tough to look at some of that stuff with rose tinted glasses.

Looking at the card for Parade of Champions 4, it looks like the main event was Kevin Von Erich vs. Nord the Barbarian, ending in a double count out. That sounds pretty dire.

Hulk Hogan's "retirement match", the main event at WrestleMania VIII, ends in a disqualification after a 12-minute match.
People get on the end of WrestleMania IX all the time, but could you imagine the uproar that would have occurred on these forums if that WrestleMania ending occurred this year?

Mabel vs. Savio Vega, full stop. Wasn't the main event, although the actual main event(Diesel/Bigelow vs. Sid/Tatanka) wasn't exactly a 5-star classic either.

Especially after Punk misses his cue so Bryan has to kick out of the STF.

Superclash III ends with the Rock n Roll Express against The Stud Stable, which could a good match but it lasts seven minutes and ends in a double dq. WTF.

But of course, Lawler and Kerry was the main event the show was built around. If we're looking "old school", there's going to be examples of that, the main event occurring 2nd to last, or even before the intermission. Sometimes big house shows would have a midget match last or something. I think it was either to let the main eventers get out of the arena earlier, or create the illusion that the matches weren't scripted, so they had to make sure they put the main even on early enough in the show to avoid local curfews if it went long. If the show was ending at 11, you weren't going to start a 60 minute time limit world title match at 10:30.

Not a PPV, but the 1988 Royal Rumble ended with the Islanders Vs The Young Stallions which was supposed to be a 2 out of 3 three falls match but Jim Powers messed up his knee and the match was cut short.

Just wondering, but was that the farthest Ed Leslie has ever been in his career? I know he had been in tag main events with Hogan before that, but a world title match on the biggest show of the year, I think that might have been his only shot at the most important title. Correct me if I am wrong.

On the same vein, you could then say that the main event of the first Main Event on 2/5/88 would be an unfinished Strike Force vs. Hart Foundation match. Seriously, I wonder if the WWE vaults have the completed match somewhere, that would be prime for a DVD. I counted Mabel vs. Savio because the KOTR show is similarly built around the finals aside from the bonus match main event, no matter where it is. If you use the final match rule, however, we can put Piper vs. Lawler here easily as well. That's Nord the Norwegian and you know it!!!! Wrestling zombies? Nah, they never draw. I hear this is Hogan's demands for WM30, that Vince revives Yoko so he can get his win back from KOTR. On the other hand, I think he'd be easy to slam right about now. Now, if we use the "last match" rule again, Starrcade '88 would qualify, as the main would technically be an INCOMPLETE, nay, UNSEEN Bunkhouse Stampede.
