Was he fired after the new Rockers run in 1996/1997? Because that all I can think of. I think when he came back briefly in 2005 he wasn't under contract. I remember hearing talk that after the awesome match with Angle and the Rockers reunion there was talk of signing him. But then Marty went and pulled a Marty and it never happened.

Yes, Survivor Series 1996 was his last match. The next night on Raw, Bob Holly (who was still a face) took Marty's place and tagged with Leif Cassidy against Furnas and Lafon in the main event.

I'm not sure who's worse - Marty for getting fired so many times, or Vince for rehiring him, presumably under the pretence that he'll be more reliable each time.

I know, why on earth did they rehire him so much. In the 90's understandable since they were low on talent and he was younger etc, but the three times post 2005 are strange.
Im guessing Jannetty did himself out of two Wrestlemania's against Michaels then, at WM 8 and 9. Surely they would have been the original plans.

Hasn't he been fired several times? And Vince kept bringing back Jeff Jarrett after leaving him. I guess he finally learned after he was held up over the IC title. Though they weren't fired, I cite Kama, Rikishi, Crush and Tensai who Vince kept bringing back or repackaging after not getting over.

Didn't they have big plans for a Rockers reunion tour after they reunited on Raw? Marty only has himself to blame for that not coming to pass, he had one last chance to make real money in wrestling but he liked being a douche more.

I can't really remember, anything post 2003 is a blur to me. Not sure how successful a Rockers reunion would have been really. It worked with DX the following year as it was closer to being more current, not sure if The Rockers would have been relevant enough to do something more permanent in 2005.

Self-explanatory.
He was sentenced to house arrest for attacking a police officer.
Hired after house arrest ended. Fired after Royal Rumble 1993 match vs Michaels after the match wasn't good after Michaels told Vince that Jannetty was drugged up during the match.
Hired after Curt Henning vouched for him. Fired after the Charles Austin trial.
Hired after the Charles Austin and Vince's steroid cases blew over. Jannetty quit this time because the company refused to split the New Rockers team with Leif Cassidy.
Hired after great match on Smackdown with Kurt Angle. Fired after a domestic incident arrest and DUI while on probation.
Hired in buildup to Michaels/McMahon. Fired after he no-showed Raw, claiming it would have broken his parole.
Hired as an agent. Fired for not showing up to work, claiming a court case kept him from leaving Florida.
Also Marty failed a drug test in 2007 when Vince wanted to bring him in again.

Lol, that McMahon wanted to hire him a ninth time is an awesome kicker to this ridiculous series of events!

I feel the same way about Goldust. Hasn't he been fired several times? Although it's something of a running gag, Dustin has only been fired in two out of his previous five runs. 1990-1991 - short-term contract as part of the Dusty/DiBiase angle. When Dusty's contract expired and went to WCW, Dustin followed. 1995-1999 - chose not to sign a new contract due to personal issues, offered a guaranteed AOL Time Warner contract by WCW. 2001-2003 - contract expired, "creative has nothing for you". 2005-2006 - fired after no-showing an episode of Raw. 2008-2012 - fired after authorising the PTP to use a banned/dangerous move that almost injured Yoshi Tatsu.
