They gave Orton no scope for a good promo. The poor guy had to eventually resort to shouty shoutiness to deal with the crowd. If he was allowed to take the non-kayfabe shots at Cena that Cena was allowed to take at him, he'd destroy Cena, because Cena is an open goal. There are so many opportunities to attack Cena's inconsistency and hypocrisy, if Orton was permitted to, he'd make Cena piss himself. HHH and Stephanie are the worst offenders for this. THEY are allowed to break kayfabe to sound cool and clever, but few people are allowed to use the same approach to retort, and those two are even easier to destroy than Cena. Wait.....Orton would make Cena piss himself by calling him a phony or whatever other buzzword that has been said about him millions of times at this point? Of course we have to go back to the "If this was a REAL promo battle. So and So would destroy Cena!" stuff that was all over the place during the Rock feud. Tiring. Confusing.

That's because during the Cena feud, the Rock was more concerned about getting shitty buzzwords to trend rather than making logical points. A phony is the least barbed of the retorts Orton could have used.

Their first few promos were fun, but then once it went into notesonwrist/divorcelawyers it just started to seem petty. I think pretty much any feud that tries to be like "Grrrr real life stuff" is bound to degenerate into what happened with Cena/Rock. ...Minus the sexual tension, of course. That was unique to them.

As a rule I don't like non-kayfabe verbal duels, because it brings into question the entire concept of wrestling, and it's incompatible with kayfabe. It's like when Stephanie was openly acknowledged with a graphic on-screen as head of creative. What does that even mean in a kayfabe context? It would be like the author of the Hunger Games appearing in the film, and Katniss saying "hey, thanks for writing my win in the first arena, I appreciate that"

I don't know, I thought Randy's promo was fine, especially after he began listing off guys in the ring he'd beaten, I thought his reactions to Cena's words were perfect, and I absolutely loved his facial reaction at the end when he looked up and saw Cena standing with the Authority after he's been so paranoid about them not being on his side over the last few months. This was definitely Cena and Bryan's segment, but I don't think it's because Randy was bad or anything. Randy Orton is notoriously underrated on the mic. Sure, he's no Austin or Punk, but he's really not as bad as the haters make him out to be. He doesn't do these long...pauses...anymore (yet people never stop complaining about it) and his promo style reminds me a lot of Jake Roberts back when he was the only one who didn't spout cocaine-induced gibberish. He's far better on the mic as a heel. His promos while in Legacy were pretty good especially when he was daring Steph to fire him. After his face turn? His promos just got bland and rehearsed (see his promos leading to the Mania match with Kane)

and the two people the crowd were behind during this segment for a match between Orton and Cena?
....Punk and Bryan.
WAKE UP, VINCE. Just because they started making their name in Chicago instead of Stamford, doesn't mean you have to treat them like shit.

OT, but I have to remember to try an isolate Punk in that GIF. It would make such a good "are you serious?" kind of GIF.
