Uh, LPs actually aren't technically classified as free usage. They're neither parodies nor reviews.

Uh, LPs actually aren't technically classified as free usage. They're neither parodies nor reviews. That's questionable. There is a review element to LP videos as LPers always give their opinion on the game and it might even be considered as being made for educational purpose as it teaches players how to play. But even if it isn't, as I said before, the footage and commentary are provided by the players and are their intellectual property (well, the commentary at least, the footage is more dodgy as it features copyrighted material). Developers can ask for image rights and royalties but it does not give them the authority to outright forbid monetizing the videos. Of course, I suppose they're allowed to have footage of copyrighted material removed from the video which would make them kind of pointless with just the commentary. Makes me wonder if LPs will end up adopting the Rifftrax model and sell audio files to be played while playing the game yourself.

Playthroughs are good marketing tools. If I see a game that looks good, I'm more likely to buy it, rather than taking a risk buying a game which could be shit. Video game companies should embrace it. I can understand some developers being against LPs. That indie game Gone Home for example, it's 100% story and almost zero gameplay. An LP of that "game" nullifies any reason whatsoever to purchase the game itself. This goes for any other virtual novel type games. Personally I don't have time/desire to play modern video games anymore (they aren't as compelling and/or worth my effort as they were when I was a teen). LPs allow me to enjoy all their content (ie story) without paying a dime.

The Let's Play bubble is going to burst really soon anyways. Youtube is absolutely saturated by them and there are tons of stories of people quitting their jobs and dropping out of college so that they can become Youtube LP superstars. A person like Northernlion isn't going to be affected that badly since he has established industry credentials and could easily transition into becoming a legit reviewer. Ditto Bisnap. TotalBiscuit, while as a person is a humongous shithead, has already done that.
Will Markiplier, PewDiePie or Tobuscus be able to accomplish that? Their whole shtick is a gimmick and wouldn't work in a professional enviroment.
The only bad thing that can become of this is that Retsuprae will lose a shitload of material. If there are less "day one" Let's Plays then that's only going to result in good things.

If anything I think YT will bend over backwards to make sure he stays a success. He brings the big bucks.

Damn, wonder how it will affect stuff like Rage Select or Giant Bomb.
Though, there's a part of me that feels like going "Yeah, of course people don't want the brand new games to get spoiled day 1. Look at that list. I can't help but notice no notices over those SNES game videos"

Still bitter that 'Unsolved Mysteries' videos were all removed.

I think YouTube gets off on finding new ways to completely f*** up their website. This is an absolutely awful move that's going to completely backfire on YouTube and the game publishers in favor, and unless the true YouTube powers like PewDiePie voice their disapproval these kind of moves are here to stay.
I just wonder how long it'll take for people to get fed up with YouTube and move on to Vimeo.

I'd love for guys like Markiplier and PewDiePie and Tobuscus to go away forever. Unfortunately, any measures that publishers decide to take (unless this clusterf*** taught them something) are going to be far more lenient on them than it will be for people who put out real content. Screaming manchildren playing Happy Wheels and Slender aren't worrying them. People who are playing AAA games and being critical of them as they do it make them much more uncomfortable.

And now I'm terrified to even start a Let's Play channel.

And now I'm terrified to even start a Let's Play channel. If you're doing it for the love of playing video games then do it. You're not getting strikes on your record, you just can't monetize them.

Yeah, but buying a microphone and a capture device for a hobby? I'm on the fence.

In the latest development, YouTube has released an official statement that helps clear up the situation a little bit. The site has confirmed that the recent explosion of copyright claims is indeed related to a new system that will subject affiliate partners of MCNs to ContentID scanning. As a reminder, “affiliate” refers to most network partners, while the other category, “managed”, refers to channels where the network itself has taken a more active role.

Nothing ridiculous going on here folks, move along. All those THQ claims are totally legitimate.
I foresee a mass exodus to Blip/Twitch in the near future.

EDIT: Ah, here's the stuff on Somethign Awful about hosting Let's Plays on Blip. DO NOT USE BLIP.TV While it used to be one of the best choices, unfortunately it seems they too are kicking our asses out but slowly, along with just being terrible in some ways, such as removing the ability to host HD video without a paid account. You can still TRY to use them but it will be at your own risk so don't come crying when your channel gets deleted.EXTRA EDIT: And look people, if you're Let's Playing to make money then what the hell? You should be doing it because you love a game and want to show it off.

I don't know what's more crazy, all the ID content clams or the LPers thinking they have a case here. We're now seeing who's in it to make a quick buck and who's in it legit. If a Lets Play on Youtube is your main source of cash, then you need to get your priorities worked out. Hell you don't even make that much money off Youtube unless you are getting PewDiePie numbers of viewers, so it's might even be better off to go work at a part-time job. Hate to work heel here but do people really think they can get a camera, record a TV, and think they have rights to what came on the TV?

No input is required. A Let's Play, in the traditional sense, is both someone playing the game and also entertaining an audience. It's a little more than just ripping cutscenes from the disc and posting it online.

A lot of people in this thread seem to be only focusing on Let's Plays, when it's all gaming content that is being affected. Angry Joe is going crazy on Twitter right now, as over 60 of his reviews have been flagged and/or blocked. And he's a reviewer, not a lets player. Not only that, but from following a lot of lets players and reviewers on Twitter, a lot of the flags seem to be from outside companies that don't even own the stuff that's being flagged. It's all a complete mess at the moment. I'd love for guys like Markiplier and PewDiePie and Tobuscus to go away forever. While I'm completely neutral on PewDiePie and Tobuscus, I definitely don't want Markiplier to disappear. He's one of my favourite let's players.

Yeah this is tagging pretty much all video game personalities. Reviewers and LPers alike.
