So if you weren't aware, Youtube has been talking about getting tougher on Youtubers using copyrighted footage (which mainly means LPers). The changes were that affiliates of Youtube Networks would now be subjected to the same ID screening as everyone else, as opposed to before when they were exempt if they were with a network. Those changes seem to have already been pushed through, as prominent Youtubers are getting anywhere from tens to hundreds of copyright claims, with claims still coming in as we speak. NOTE: These are content ID claims, which means that the uploader isn't allowed to monetize them. It DOES NOT result in a strike against the account. theRadBrad, the biggest videogame walkthrough guy on Youtube with 2 million subscribers, is getting hit with a ton of claims: Tetraninja, with nearly 500k subscribers, has said "We're getting destroyed atm. I'm nearing 300 vids.". This doesn't seem to have affected 'Managed' Youtube accounts yet, and according to Machinima on Twitter, no one was informed of any changes going through. The best part about all of this great news is that most of these claims seem to be fraudulent. A channel named 4GamerMovie has claimed tons of Metro Last Light footage, per TotalBiscuit (4GamerMovie doesn't own the IP, if anyone was wondering): twitter.com/Totalbiscuit/status/410113842229051393. So yeah. How do you feel about this, FAN? UPDATE: @capcom_Unity: Youtubers: Pls let us know if you've had videos flagged today. These may be illegitimate claims not instigated by us. We are investigating. So this might be more on Google's end then them being pressured by game companies. Also, Capcom: Champion of the People. UPDATE 2: Deep Silver and Codemasters reps took to Neogaf to let people know that this isn't a new initiative by them, and that they're fine with video monetizing. Naughty Dog has tweeted that, while they don't like people monetizing their material, this isn't something of their doing. So it's looking like the new Content ID Algorithm has gone all Overlord on our asses, and that this isn't actually devs and publishers cracking down (yet).

This in my opinion is a huge mistake. "Let's plays" are vital to me in choosing which games to buy. I'm not even going to read the BS reviews as they have to give the games 9 out of 10 or the developer wont send them any more games. So they are worthless in my opinion. There are wayyy too many games getting 9's. Back in the Master System days, it was very rare for a game to get a 9, the game had to actually be a 9. Most games got 4's, 5's and 6's. Which I would say is a fair review of them.
So without the LPs I simply wont be buying games.

Back then there was no middle ground, either a game was shite and a half or it was pure gold. Nowadays it is all over the map and there are a lot more factors to take into consideration. That is partially why review scores are higher on average, if one area is bad all the other areas can still make it a "good" game. Still this is a bad idea to go after LPers, as they are far and away the most popular people on YT other than musicians.

Screw the game videos, are they gonna crack down on the wrestling videos? They're probably as safe as they've been. It seems like Botchamania gets taken down every five minutes, so it's not like it could get any worse.

Those game companies are finally cutting the head of the LP dragon, are they? Not even the game companies for f***'s sake. Google's flagging system has turned into a rabid attack dog. Most of these content claims aren't even being made by people involved in the game industry. This is embarrassing.

Seriously though, as far as LPs go, I get that developers would get angry that people profit from their works and frankly, I find it legitimate that they ask for a slice of the pie since they're the ones who made the game being played. However, what is NOT legitimate is that in every case I've heard of, developers wanted to have the WHOLE pie and forbid any monetization from footage of their game.
This is both unethical and illegal as the gameplay, footage and commentary are the players' and the developers had no hand in it. They should be allowed to ask for image rights and royalties but them trying to forbid any and all monetization of gaming videos is preventing content providers from making money off their own content, and trying to get the full profit from the videos is them also profiting off other people's work as, again, the footage and commentary were provided by someone else. It's as if movie studios forbade TV channels from making money off of shows that play movie clips and/or demanded that all profit be handed to them.
Honestly, if video game companies were smart, they'd realize they would have more to gain by sponsoring LPs and requesting a cut of the profit or by making them pay broadcast rights as movie studios do with TV channels.
And of course, that's not even getting into the problem of fraudulent claims, which is something YouTube has been plagued with for years and has yet to fix, as they are apparently more focused on fixing things that aren't broken.

The thing I just don't get....YouTube WON that lawsuit with Viacom. So shouldn't that mean they don't really have anything to fear anymore because it's a precedent that means they can never be held legally liable for infringement under the law? Why would Google care anymore who has copyright stuff?

Also it is stupid when you consider both the PS4 and Xbox One allow gamers to create and release their own videos. In other words the two consoles were pretty much made with LPs in mind.

Playthroughs are good marketing tools. If I see a game that looks good, I'm more likely to buy it, rather than taking a risk buying a game which could be shit. Video game companies should embrace it.
