Ugh, this is a punch to the gut. @paulmyerberg Auburn's Kirk Sampson confirms Phillip Lutzenkirchen passed this morning. He was 23. Heartbreaking. Car crush. So sad. Joseph Davis an UGA baseball player was also killed in that wreck with Lutzenkirchen.

m.espn.go.com/ncf/story?storyId=11147961Why this is news escapes me. But I'll pontificate. Perhaps these are the first two to ever not qualify academically. Look Syracuse is not barber college. Don't issue an LOI to a school you know is beyond your ability. More proof of athletes using NCAA schools as a minor league for NFL hopes. Meanwhile a kid who busted his ass four yrs in a classroom bc he wanted to be accepted, got told no so they'd have room for terds like these

But it's the offseason where we're light on actual news and it's not like 'cuse can afford to lose promising recruits.

B/R says Jameis Winston took out an insurance police that'll pay him around 8-10 million if he doesn't go in round 1. I don't blame the guy for having a contingency plan in case shit goes bad and his stock drops.

Some talking head on sirius 91 said Jaemis taking out the policy guarantees he will be NFL bound at the end of 14. No satisfactory reason given other than he is preparing. I don't know if that is a guarantee but myself I believe he is gone after 14, but if he stays I will be glad I am wrong. I'm old school on most things and a four year star is tremendous. I hated him then but Geno Toretta was a four yr guy. Rick Mier etc etc. I hate one and done in BB and I don't want Manziel to start a trend in football.

Police believe alcohol was consumed by all four passengers in the car that crashed Sunday and killed former Auburn TE Philip Lutzenkirchen.
The car ran through a stop sign and spun out of control, flipping through a ditch. Lutzenkirchen, not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from his seat. Toomer’s Corner filled on Sunday with Auburn fans paying respects to the former tight end.

I can see if it were due to injury or something, but what the hell kind of insurance company is he dealing with!?

Texas A&M's QB competition will come down to sophomore Kenny Hill and freshman Kyle Allen. This has been known. Kenny Hill's public intox charge likely left some doubts on maturity and responsibility. But Allen is green as grass. At least Hill has taken snaps against SEC competition.

Kansas coach Charlie Weis must do better than last season's two-win campaign or face dismissal, notes NFL.com.
"What, exactly, has Weis done on the college level to lead anyone to think he can get this program going in the right direction?" wrote staff writer Mike Huguenin. "He has a five-year contract, but another two-win season may lead KU administrators to pull the plug. There are two eminently winnable games in September. But another 0-9 Big 12 mark looks possible." The Jayhawks will open the season with a victory against Southeast Missouri State, and should be favored a few weeks later when they host Central Michigan. Other than that, they travel to play an improved Duke program and then embark on a treacherous nine-game Big 12 schedule. Weis' time as a major collegiate coach looks to be drawing to a close, unless he can pull a rabbit from his hat.
NFL.com named former Florida QB and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow as the best college football player of the 2000s.
Florida head coach Will Muschamp "unquestionably sits on the hottest seat in the nation," according to NFL.com.
"Florida suffered numerous injuries and was 4-8 last season, its first losing record since 1979," noted staff writer Mike Huguenin. "Florida was 11-2 in 2012, and there is some talent on hand, especially on defense. New offensive coordinator Kurt Roper was hired away from Duke, and his work with what has been a pitiful unit the past four years is the key to whether Muschamp returns in 2015." While he must win to survive, there's hope for Muschamp: Phil Steele ranks his outfit No. 24 overall in his preseason rankings. Steele wrote: "The Gators are an easy pick for my Most Improved List. They are +5.0 in the Stock Market Indicator, and had four net close losses and -4 net upsets last year. They also have 14 returning starters and can only remain healthier. UF does draw both LSU and Bama out of the West but it should be a bounce back year."

I remember when he got hired at KU, and KU fans were going nuts talking about how he was going to take the Jayhawks to national prominence. They'd brag about what he did at Notre Dame, ignoring that Notre Dame even as much as it's fallen, is much much much more enticing for players than KU. They also ignored that his BCS births with Notre Dame came thanks to kids that Tyrone Willingham recruited.

I thought he could make them at best a perinniel 6-6/7-5 and occasional 9 win team but he hasn't even done that. I thought he could do no worse than Gil but somehow he has. Also, that news report is one of the worst and most pointless one I've ever read. "Weis has to do well or he's fired." No shit His recruiting classes sucked too. The only players that may end up doing anything in the long run are Floyd, Tate, Zack Martin, and Manti Te'o. The latter two were good from Coach Kelly.

With Beckham and OU, an interesting and possible cotton bowl between OU and Mizzou would have an interesting dynamic. I believe Oklahoma only has themselves as an enemy/threat. History tells me they can and will beat themselves when the path is clear for them. Not discounting Baylor or Okie lite, but OU is coming back with a loaded set and coming off of a huge bowl win over a superman. Momentum is on their side. OU can end up still finishing second if they believe their own hype. November is November and that is when it usually happens. I think Baylor wins the Big XII clean and OU goes to the cotton bowl. Mizzou should have a good year but bowl tie-ins in Florida don't sell Missouri as well as Dallas does. I'd love to see that game

Former Penn State sophomore QB Austin Whipple transferred to UMass.
Former USC QB Max Wittek is in the process of applying to Hawaii for the 2014 school year and says there is a "good possibility" he will walk-on the football team.
