It's often said that bringing in Ricky Vaughn as the fake VE cousin Lance is where World Class really started to downshift, as too many people recognized him as a local kid and started to get wise to that the whole thing was a work.
What they SHOULD have done was bring him in exactly how they did...except call him Ricky Von Erich. No, I'm serious. Here's the thing - they bring him in, no "Lance" crap, they state off the bat he's called himself Ricky "Vaughn" all these years because he wanted to earn his way through life and not ride his famous cousins' coattails, so he modified "Von Erich" into "Vaughn" as tribute. Instead of giving a recognizable local kid a completely new character, they just instill enough doubt in the people who *do* know Ricky to think "well, maybe I didn't know as much about his family as I thought." Sure, there'd be some that would still catch wise, but not on the level it did.

I always thought they would finish the angle by doing what was "rumored" in the Apter mags, that Lance shut the lights out in the Sportatorium when Kerry lost the WCCW title.

Or maybe they should have gotten someone out of state so no one would have recognized him so easily?

They should have also brought in his "uncle" Waldo Von Erich to help sell the angle (i'm pretty sure waldo wasnt doing much around 1985, so im sure he could have dropped in).

He was apparently very well known and word would have spread that they were BSing it anyway. I think they went into damage control immeditally and just wanted to put it behind them. Not like he was a big loss.

What they should've done was turned it into an angle, where "Lance" masqueraded as a Von Erich, then when Fritz grew wise, Lance laid him out, setting up "Lance" vs. Kerry as one of the main programs.

Considering that they were high school stars in the area surely a lot of people in Dallas had to know that Von Erich wasn't Kerry and the rest's last name right?

Before the internet days, a worker could easily live under his real name and travel under his gimmick. Today it's just about impossible
