How do I cut around a figure in a picture and save the final image as just the cropped figure ie, say I wanted to cut out HHH in this picture (I don't particularly but it's just an example)and lose the background/ I know how to cut around figures in pictures but the final image always ends up being a box shape. Basically, I would have cut triple h out of the background but when I save the image it is not HHH shaped, but box shaped. It ends up having HHH against a blank picture. How would I save the final image so it was HHH shaped?

Make sure you are saving it as a PNG, and not a JPEG.

If you're using Photoshop, open up the photo, go over to the layers and right-click & select Covert To Smart Object, then select the erase tool on the side and click anywhere on the photo and pop-up will come up asking you if you want to rasterized the image. Click yes and start erasing away what you want. The BG should be checkered where you erase. After you're done, save as a .PNG file.
DO NOT FLATTEN IMAGE AT ALL
