My guess is Summerslam 2005. Cena seemed to be universally popular until then, then WWE started putting him up against established fan favourites (who were made heels) like Jericho and then Kurt Angle and it backfired. By Wrestlemania 22 against Triple H, it had become part of Cena's gimmick.

Vengeance.
It was full on hate by the time he started feuding with Angle.

Nobody evokes such passionate response from capacity crowds the world over. Even the day he was born, the joy divided hospital staff in the maternity wing.

The first time I remember it being really noticeable was Summerslam 2005 against Jericho.

From memory alone the reactions seemed more negative in mid-late 2005. It felt like most crowds were begging for Angle to take the belt off him. Especially when you consider they were heavily pegging Cena as an underdog despite him constantly overcoming the most unfair odds imaginable, and losing maybe 4 or 5 times total that year.
Things seemed to even out more once he started wrestling Edge.

I remember there being a story around the time of the Wrestlemania match with Triple H that Kurt Angle was being blamed by Hunter for John Cena's mixed reactions. With the implication being that Triple H could fix it.
Well done on that one, Hunter.

He initially got cheered after Edge took the title, but once he won it right back...the crowd was back to seething hatred. I was at Wrestlemania 22, and I never knew such hate until that night.

Off the top of my head, his matches with Jericho and Christian. When he won the belt back from Edge so soon, I can't imagine that earned him many fans.

Triple H definitely hurt him. But then Edge came back and fixed that again. I still can't believe how stupid they were for choosing Triple H to wrestle him over Edge at Mania. They had lightning in a bottle and they squandered it. So f***ing dumb.

Especially amazing when you consider how much of a hated heel HHH had been before that. Dare I say that Cenas mixed reactions planted the seeds for a DX reunion?

Honestly given how little HHH actually did from his return in early fall 2005 to his turn with Shawn in June 2006, they might have been better off just reforming DX earlier and given them one spectacle heavy Wrestlemania match.

My favorite part of that was that one NEWZ story on how HHH thought that Angle/Jericho weren't doing their jobs as heels correctly since they were getting cheered over Cena, so he went out there to show them how it's done. By shooting on Cena which got the [know it-all] fans to boo Cena even harder.

Oh and Cena wasn't allowed to retort anything outside of "you're so great, Triple H." *boos* If anything, early Cena was a great deterrent to get heels to turn face.

It was the Jericho feud in 2005. Jericho had reached that respect level with fans where they didn't want to boo the guy. It was all downhill from there. It didn't help that WWE had him wrestle against Angle and Michaels later that year. It's like they set the guy up for failure.

I say it really started around Summerslam and then they just kept fanning the flames with the other guys they had him fued with (mostly guys that the internet loved at the time)

Sometimes I feel like WWE did set him to fail to punish him for rising above the role they wanted him in. Like they're purposely shoving him down our throats to make us sick of him. But Cena is such a great performer that the audience will never completely turn on him. So this is what we're stuck with.
