It just seems so dumb that they had him feuding with guys who were so well established when he was still tentative (though extremely popular). Against JBL the fans mostly loved him. But stuff like Y2Cheap were hardly great material, and Jericho, Angle, HBK, Eduge were all seen as better. HHH also got the internet fans on his side with his promos.
They should have just had Cena feud with some lesser names to establish himself for a while longer. They have been living with the results ever since.

It was the Jericho feud in 2005. Jericho had reached that respect level with fans where they didn't want to boo the guy. It was all downhill from there. It didn't help that WWE had him wrestle against Angle and Michaels later that year. It's like they set the guy up for failure. Sometimes I feel like WWE did set him to fail to punish him for rising above the role they wanted him in. Like they're purposely shoving him down our throats to make us sick of him. But Cena is such a great performer that the audience will never completely turn on him. So this is what we're stuck with. I don't think that was the case. I think they really wanted him to work out, but for whatever reason forgot what made the Hogan push work, and instead tried to force it on Cena instead of getting him to play to his real strengths.

Some scattered boos were happening in his feud with JBL (probably since honestly, most of the time Cena came off like the bigger asshole of the two), but it first became really noticeable around Vengeance and by SummerSlam was impossible to ignore.
I do wonder how things would've gone if they had turned Cena heel and kicked him to the midcard after he first dropped the title like he supposedly wanted to. On one hand, I think it honestly would have been the better move and in 2005 and 2006 he was not cut out to be a main event guy, but he did definitely grow into the role and without him as the top guy these past few years it's hard telling if they'd be better or worse off.
