Back when Night of Champions first started, there was a reason for it: WWE had 8 championships, and could make a full card of nothing but title matches. Then it became the PPV where every title was on the line.
But now, we're down to four titles (yes, the US title does still exist). Which can still all be defended at a PPV.
So, should Night of Champions be replaced by something else?

Yes. It should be replaced by a second extreme rules.

Replace it with a War Games PPV.
(And if it does, the final Night of Champions would leave the lasting memory of the Eve of Vacancy.)

I was just thinking of ways they could pad this event out if they don't introduce any new titles. For instance, they could do a deal where the winner of one title then immediately has to face a challenger, perhaps even throw Money in the Bank into the mix with that idea. Or they could have an Iron Man match be the main event. Four matches is kind of tough to to stretch out to three hours, but there are ways the PPV could be kept with every match still being a title match. At least for a little while before it got old.

Yes. It should be replaced by a second extreme rules. No if it gets replaced by a second anything to should be a second Elimination chamber because lets face it elimination chamber matches are second only to money in the bank in terms of excitement.

I had an idea where instead of creating new titles altogether, there could be a few annual tournaments with the championship matches taking place at this PPV. For instance, an annual cruiserweight tournament, hardcore tournament and a trio tournament.

There's 5 titles, not 4, but yeah I see what you're saying.

What about that battle royal they had when Jesse Ventura guest hosted Raw where the superstars who never had a title shot before fought it out to decide a number one contender? Adding that to Night of Champions as sort of a chance to be a future champion could work AND, it sets up an immediate program for the next pay-per-view.

They'll probably pad it out by having a number one contenders match and a random non-title match involving a main eventer somewhere on the card.
I liked the idea of having the scramble match return for Night of Champions. It fits the concept of the PPV because the champion really has to survive in order to retain his belt.

The problem with basing any PPV around a certain concept or match type is that a new feud could be forced into a match type just because of the PPV itself. Like last year when CM Punk faced Ryback in Hell in a Cell, despite them never having had a match before and the feud only starting about a week prior to that.
With the possible exception of Extreme Rules and maybe Elimination Chamber, there shouldn't be any more gimmick PPVs.

It's highly probable, considering how much of an afterthought the PPV concept was this year, with Curtis Axel almost not defending the IC title.

Just because it's named "Night of Champions" doesn't mean the entire cord should soley be based on title matches. Yes, I think all titles should be on the line (It's a rather simple gimmick compared to the other themed PPVs), but I have no problem with matches being on the card that aren't title matches as well.

Give King of the Ring the Night of Champions PPV slot.
Then give Night of Champions the every few years RAW slot. Just imagine if every other year or so, on one special Raw, they defended every title, and a few actually changed hands.
