"According to PWInsider.com, WWE quietly released Richie Steamboat, the son of Hall of Famer Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, from his NXT contract. Richie had been out of action for quite sometime due to a potentially career threatening back injury." -- SourceI should be shocked, but honestly I'd forgotten about him since he'd been out so long.

I could see TNA pushing him just because of his dad and the fact that Richie was kind of, sort of in WWE for a while.

Maybe they can use American Dragon name for Bryan now? I heard they were saving it for when Richie would be called up.

I hope he doesn't have a career ending injury Unfortunately, considering Steamboat's family connection and talent when he was on NXT, I'd assume more than likely this is the case (but on the same token- if Steamboat is able to come back from it, he'll be rehired without a problem like Raquel Diaz in a "If you can't do it at this moment, we'll let you go- but if you ever want to come back, we'll be happy to resign you" move.

It's sad to see a wrestler have a potentially career ending injury, while having never even made it out of developmental.

I hope Richie can actually recover from this back injury. With that said the man is 26 so when he recovers there's still time for him to return. I do think it's a bad move to release him from his contract like this though but then again, for all we know his career could be over. That doesn't mean he can't be an interviewer or do something with the company. Sad.

Considering Richie spent almost half of NXT career in injury reserves, I'm not shocked he got dropped. No one would had known about his release if Chris Hero didn't mentioned it in an interview. Maybe they can use American Dragon name for Bryan now? I heard they were saving it for when Richie would be called up. That was just IWC urban legend on why Bryan didn't have the American Dragon name.

I honestly forgot he existed. He's been injured, for what, 2 years?

Yeah it's a scummy move to release somebody when they're injured, it's even worse if it's a career ending injury as there are plenty of non-wrestling roles WWE could have trained him for, that said we don't know the circumstances and it's possible he was offered an alternative position and declined it.

I don't think it's scummy, he's been injured forever and may not be suitable for another job within the company.

"This kid used to wrestle, but he blew his knee out so he's gonna be head of accounting for the next 39 years. You're fired actual accountant"

The first tapings were May 17 2012 and he hasn't wrestled since October 25th of last year. So he's been out for over a year
