"WTF", "NXT" and "A-Ri" seem to go very well together.

There's not one guy on TV right now that Riley should be pushed over. It's WWE, not little league baseball. It's not about everyone getting to play so the mommies and daddies are happy, there are no participation trophies. He's a mediocre talent on a roster that's full of exceptional talents. His main skill seemed to be his talking, so they put him on color commentary and he's flopped at that. Matt Striker was a better wrestler, talker, and commentator than Alex Riley, and they let him go. What does that tell you? No ones saying he should be world champion or anything, but he deserves to have a televised match every once in a while. Yes, if there are talents better than him, then they should get bigger pushes. But that doesn't mean Riley doesn't have a place on the roster. Riley buckled down to get better in the ring and stayed over with the fans for all that time, and for that reason alone, he deserves another shot. There's no reason why he can't commentate and wrestle. He's been neglected for his entire career, even when he actually was being pushed. He deserves the opportunity to redeem himself. Nobody's asking for a megapush or a "participation trophy". I just want to see a guy I love to watch perform the craft that he loves, on a decent and respectable stage.

Here's my view...
Regal was chosen because of the story they wanted to tell. It's a pretty familiar story. Roddy Piper, Randy Savage, Larry Zbyszko, and Jerry Lawler have done similar angles where they were compelled to leave the announce booth to help out someone against a heel. In these cases, the announcer was seen as a respected (or even beloved) figure who has a connection to the audience. William Regal fits this spot and Alex Riley doesn't. Also, Cesaro gets more out of beating Regal than he gets from beating Riley. That's because of the respect the fans have for Regal.

Riley may be younger and not have the accomplished career that Regal did, but he still has the overness with the fans, and I'm sure they would've clamored for him to stand up for someone. He may not be a "respected veteran" but he still had the connection to the audience part down. I just don't think it's right for someone as talented as A-Ry to never get his due. Imo he should be getting those types of angles if only as a means to phase him back into the regular rotation of talent. I understand that Regal could give a bigger rub than Riley, and has that respect with he fans. I would just like to see Riley given a proper opportunity to earn that type of respect as well.

I wouldn't mind a heel tag team with Miz and Riley, pushed as a real team ala Miz/Morrison. WWE seems to prefer Miz as a face since they quickly switched him back. I do disagree that Riley is over. It's been too long since his face turn on Miz, which was the only time the fans showed much interest in him. WWE hasn't let him do anything that could even get him over. For a few weeks he was the guy backstage who got beat up and now he is a broadcaster.

Riley doesn't deserve anything but to get released.

Riley has amazing energy and charisma and during his matches the crowd rallies behind him and pops whenever he's on offense. And he's gotten pops on a jobber entrance on two separate occasions after being introduced to no music, once against Cesaro, and once in the MiTB qualifying match against Ziggler.
