The WrestleMania 9 rebooking got me thinking about past WWF PPVs that could have been better with different matches or storylines.
I would love to get a thread going with rebooking a WWF PPV or special event (like a Coliseum Video release of a non-PPV event like Big Event or Wrestlefest 88).
My choice would be the first Royal Rumble. As the first, it was alright but seems like something just thrown on the wall and see if it sticks. They had two 2/3 falls matches, a contract signing, the bench press among things you wouldn't normally see on a PPV. I would add 10 more guys to the Rumble, take out the 2/3 falls stipulation, take away the bench press (do it on Superstars or a weekly show that more people might see since they would talk about Bravo's "record" on what seemed like every PPV). Leave the contract signing.
Based on the roster at the time I go with (in no particular order)
1 Hart
2 Neidhart
3 Santana
4 Martel
5 Roberts
6 Reed
7 Race
8 Volkoff
9 Zhukov
10 Blair
11 Brunzell
12 Houston
13 Bass
14 Davis
15 Warrior
16 Gang
17 Dog
18 Hillbilly
19 Muraco
20 Bravo
21 Ax
22 Smash
23 Jacques
24 Raymond
25 Powers
26 Roma
27 Hercules
28 Patera
29 Bigelow
30 Koko
Bigelow wins last eliminating Bravo and Gang. Given how huge he was pushed when he first came in it should keep going as winner of a big battle royal.
Savage/Beefcake v. Valentine/Honkytonk. This match was featured on house shows around January 88 and puts an end to each respective feud and ignites the Beefcake/HTM feud. Faces win by Hart interference DQ.
Bulldogs v. Islanders. Save the late 1987 Matilda kidnapping for this event. I contradict myself slightly in not having the Bravo bench press at RR. The match never occurs given the kidnapping and it allows for more time for other matches.
Sika v. George Steele. Basic throwaway match so everyone on roster gets on the PPV. This was another house show match. I see Sika winning after use of Fuji's cane.
Jumping Bomb Angels v. Glamour Girls. Angels win belts.
Rude v. Steamboat. Orndorff leaving screws up Rude a little as this becomes a basic match. Ends in a double count out.
