Don't use GoDaddy, you can't do anything with the domain name you buy from them unless you buy their insane overpriced website building stuff. I found this out the hard way.

I have both my domain name and hosting with Go Daddy, and have never had any problems with it. I'd also recommend Web24, we use them at my work for all our hosting needs (I work for a web development agency).

They usually let you try them out free with a coupon code. Might be worth checking out.

You could easily build a decent website using Google's Blogger format. Check out some user templates - I wouldn't recommend using it for a more dynamic, larger website, but for anything else, it may be surprising to see what can be done with what was once primarily a blog-platform. Free and fast hosting with them, Picasa for image hosting (which gives you unlimited bandwidth and storage for most photo sizes), and you can direct a proper URL you get from a GoDaddy or anyone else who supports it to that site for a very affordable annual price. If you ever forget or just don't re-register your URL, your site will remain active since it's hosted via Google. The major drawback of using Blogger is that Google could pull the plug on it without much notice, but they do allow you to make complete back-ups very easily.
EDIT: One more thing - keep using Tumblr and whatever else while you run a site. The trend right now is that people want information to come to them, not the other way around. You need to utilize social media if you want to gain an audience.
