I always wondered this, why a wrestler will hold a belt if in real life it doesn't belong to him? At least in the kayfabe era made more sense since still they had to act as champions for 24 hours, but even then, lots of times screwy things happened there
I ask because I always read stories about guys taking the belt as "hostages" in order to force promoters to pay more money. At least don't know how things work now
Btw, I will love to hear some stories related to this topic since is always fascinating to hear old school stories from here

In WWE and TNA etc it's done because the guys make appearances with the title belts and the fans get to take photos with them etc etc.
In the indies the promoter usually takes the belt home but sometimes the workers take them home. This is so the indy guy can mark out or defend it in another promotion an hour away. Your indy guys are usually the ones who are going to hold the belt up when they get mad.
As for a story. Here's a quick one, A fresh out of TNA Elix Skipper was working a small independent promotion near his home regularly and they put the belt on him but the night Elix won the belt the gate wasn't big enough so Elix simply took the belt that night (Which was a WCW US Title with a sticker) and pawned it at a pawn shop for a 100-200 bucks.

I think when the Hart Foundation won the belts off the Bulldogs, Dynamite kept the belt until they won it. Even though it was him so insisted the Harts were the ones who took it from them. The Harts needed to do some publicity photos, but only Davey handed over the belt for this to be done. So they had to shoot them with one belt.
Pretty sure this story is from Diana Hart's book, which was so full of libel and lies and it was pulled from the market, so, take it for what you will.

Your indy guys are usually the ones who are going to hold the belt up when they get mad. Reminds me of one of Colt Cabana's recent videos where he talked about an upcoming title defense at an indy promotion and pointed out that while he was wearing the belt, it was just out of frame for the camera. Another story was from someone who worked on WWE creative in 2002. After Shawn won the World title at Survivor Series, he didn't want to carry it around so he gave it to this guy and told him to bring it next night for Raw, and he panicked slightly, thinking about what might happen the following day if he lost the belt.

It's funny to me that CHIKARA guys feel justified stealing from someone because they didn't get their 20 dollar payday.

The place of the title belt within a promotion is actually something I have wondered about in the modern context. While I can believe that the title belts are not cheap to have made, I have long through that for a major promotion like WWE it would make sense for each road crew to have a complete set they carry around with them; it lessens the possibility of a wrestler losing the belt with their luggage or some other screw up, and also provides a back up if one belt does get lost. It would also minimize the damage if a wrestler were to jump to another promotion while holding the belt.

It would also minimize the damage if a wrestler were to jump to another promotion while holding the belt. Nowadays, the replica belts are almost indistinguishable from the real thing; this is probably due to the design being intended to be reproduced for this purpose. Back in the day, though, there were few belt makers and their creations tended to be one-offs; the facilities just weren't in place for mass production and few promoters would have allowed repros anyway as it would diminish the value of the belt. In the past, much was made of the expense gone into the physical belt.
