So uh, whose bright idea was it to have a last man standing match between these two on the Smackdown before the PPV where they again had a last man standing match?? How is that going to pop a buyrate? 'Buy this match! By the way here it is for free.'

As I recall, both matches were actually pretty decent. The SmackDown one with Del Rio winning the title edges out the Rumble rematch by a little bit, though.

That's not the point though, why buy the PPV when the match has JUST happened on free TV?

Oh yeah, I can definitely understand that. I wasn't trying to defend that point.
My only theory is that it was such a low priority on a card that had the Rumble match and Rock getting a title shot that they just slapped a rematch together and called it a day.

With very few exceptions, any matches on the Rumble outside of the Rumble itself are just filler. That was just an excuse to burn off Big Show's rematch clause and free up Del Rio for the returning Swagger (holy crap, was that seriously just a year ago?).
Other than Rock/Punk at the same event, I don't think any title matches in recent memory have really been used to help sell the PPV.

Better question is whose bright idea was it to give Del Rio the title on SmackDown?
An even better question is whose bright idea was it to give Del Rio the title?

Also the first last man standing match they had on Smackdown was very good I thought, the match at Royal Rumble had no hope living up to it, especially since they recycled the Cena/Batista LMS match ending if I recall.

Better question is whose bright idea was it to give Del Rio the title on SmackDown? An even better question is whose bright idea was it to give Del Rio the title? Face Del Rio was over.

Better question is whose bright idea was it to give Del Rio the title on SmackDown? An even better question is whose bright idea was it to give Del Rio the title? Face Del Rio was over. A lot of people tend to overlook this. He was over as a face and was even over coming off the double turn with Ziggler. What did him in was the insistence on reverting back to ultra-aggressive Del Rio.

He was somewhat over, but I don't think he was over enough to justify giving him the title.

He was somewhat over, but I don't think he was over enough to justify giving him the title. The other way more important main eventers of Smackdown, Orton and Sheamus, were dealing with The Shield, and with Bryan and Kane in Team Hell No and Henry injured, they didn't have much of a choice.

It was silly booking, but no one was going to buy the Rumble for Del Rio vs Big Show anyway.

That's not the point though, why buy the PPV when the match has JUST happened on free TV? The PPV match was the rematch and, thus, it wasn't announced before the Smackdown match. The logic was Show was certain Del Rio couldn't beat him in a last man standing match twice. Given the Smackdown match was very good with a hot crowd, this is one time I think it was totally warranted. And, as said already, face Del Rio was very over. His face turn at TLC was the most organic genuine face turn in years. The people loved Ricardo, and Del Rio was turned face off of coming to Ricardo's aid, giving us a reason to cheer for him. Pair that with how long he succeeded as a face in Mexico with his truly face moveset and Big Show doing the absolute best heel work of his career and you have a solid program. Face Del Rio was tanked solely by Swagger getting busted for pot so that nothing truly controversial or interesting could happen from that moment on in their Wrestlemania program. We'll never know what might have been had that not happened.

Del Rio would probably still be face if Ziggler didn't get hurt.

It was silly booking, but no one was going to buy the Rumble for Del Rio vs Big Show anyway. No one's going to buy the Rumble for anything other than the Rumble match. And Del Rio as a face was great at first. It wasn't until he started feuding with Swagger that he started to fizzle out.

I was never arguing about Del Rio not being over, I enjoyed early face Del Rio and I loved his 'kick concussed man in the head for twenty minutes' heel turn too. I just don't get how booking the exact same match twice in a row makes sense business wise, never mind the kayfabe end of it.

Didn't they face again at Elimination Chamber though? They did. Big Show got another match on the basis that the Last Man Standing matches didn't count, that Del Rio never pinned him and could not pin him. Del Rio won by submission.

Weren't they in Miami and Del Rio won cause of the fact he's latino?

Meh the WHC has been filler for years. If anything the last man standing match from Smackdown was a good match so the people concerned about the match quality of the rest of the card will go yeah Del Rio vs. Big Show will be pretty good.
