Better question is whose bright idea was it to give Del Rio the title on SmackDown? An even better question is whose bright idea was it to give Del Rio the title? Who's bright idea was Del Rio? Who's Del Rio?

I was so annoyed at this feud because it only continued to devalue the WHC. Say what you will about it being booked below the WWE Championship, but at the very least, Big Show and Sheamus were booked to be top level competitors. Their match at Hell in the Cell made them both look amazing. So when you have Del Rio, who had lost to Sheamus numerous times and also lost a feud to Orton, come in and win the title, it just lowers its value. I don't know who they could have had in his place, but with the abundance of upper-midcarders in the WWE, they should not have had a guy who had been losing repeatedly in past several months win the title.

I think the most brilliantly stupid example of this type of booking was the RAW right before the Fatal Fourway PPV, where they had... a fatal fourway match.

Who's bright idea was Del Rio? Who's Del Rio? No, Jim Neidhardt.

Other than Rock/Punk at the same event, I don't think any title matches in recent memory have really been used to help sell the PPV. Hardy/Orton in 2008 was built up pretty huge.

Better question is whose bright idea was it to give Del Rio the title on SmackDown? An even better question is whose bright idea was it to give Del Rio the title? Face Del Rio was over. He won the world title like a week after turning face, at which point it wasn't really possible to gauge if he was over or if people just really like seeing people beat up 3MB.

Yeah I think it's a myth that he was over as a babyface. I don't remember him being that popular. The Jack Swagger feud was pretty heatless if I remember correctly, and I'm sure he tried stealing the YES chant around that time too. SI SI SI.... I'll admit he was probably more over as a babyface than he was after turning heel again in the Summer but then who isn't more over than heel Del Rio?

That's not the point though, why buy the PPV when the match has JUST happened on free TV? For the Royal Rumble maybe?

And Del Rio as a face was great at first. It wasn't until he started feuding with Swagger that he started to fizzle out. It was kind of hard to take Del Rio's "Hero of the Immigrants" schtick at face value when just a year before he was ripping into immigrants as being freeloaders.

The SI chants started as a by product of the 18 Seconds backlash when Del Rio was still a heel, and somehow just became its own thing.

I feel like there was something going on with Big Show's contract at the time, so it was a way to get the title off of him in case talks fell through... sound right to anybody else?

Gives Smackdown a pop, an air of excitement by getting a free title change (a rarity at any point in wrestling history) and allows Del Rio winning the strap to not be overshadowed by The Rock winning the WWE Title at the Rumble.
