Most first person shooters are more strategy/team based nowadays, are there any current games that have the same feel and gameplay style as doom/duke nukem 3d/redneck rampage or other "shoot everything that moves" games like that?

Might want to give Painkiller a go, though it's not very recent. I'd also recommend RAGE (made by Id Software), though if you play them on PC, I hope your machine can handle it as it was poorly optimized (oddly enough, the framerate's good, but it has VERY bad pop-up issues, a shame because it looks gorgeous). There's also Serious Sam 3 but I find it rather repetitive, at least as far as I've seen (I think I'm betwenn a third and halfway through the game). And of course there's the already classic Borderlands 1 & 2, although I still say it would be better without the respawn system where you are brought back to the latest checkpoint and the only penalty for dying is losing a bit of money, which really isn't that important in the game as you will probably find better equipment during your travels than in shops.

Painkiller Heretic (fantasy based) Hexen (sequel to Heretic) Serious Sam Bulletstorm Rise Of The Triad Shadow Warrior
I think Total Overdose was similar as well, but can't remember, been forever since I played it.

I wish a company would throw money at Arnold to be the voice and likeness for an over-the-top oldschool shooter.

Heretic was one of the first FPS games I ever played, still one of my personal favorites. (Btw, Heretic & Hexen are available on Steam.) I also agree with the Serious Sam games. If you've got a 360, they released The Serious Sam Collection on there, all the games on one disc.

Wasn't total Overdose a Sandbox? Yeah it was a mixture of GTA and Max Payne. Oddly enough, it wasn't made by Rockstar and was very light-hearted. Still a fun game and criminally under-appreciated.

I played the new Shadow Warrior recently. While it is relatively "old school" it's still got slow running speed, linear levels and semi regenerating health(you gain healing powers and heal with a button press).
In comparison the new Rise of the Triad is pretty much 99% faithful reproduction of the original's gameplay. It had checkpoint saving though.

You can also always download an engine like ZDOOM and dive into the happy fun world of custom WAD's. There's an insane amount of variety out there from new weapons to new levels to outright total conversions.

There's an insane amount of variety out there from new weapons to new levels to outright total conversions. Brutal Doom doesn't have custom levels, but it has so many gameplay tweaks and additions (new weapons, better AI, new enemy attacks, localized damage, etc) it's like playing a whole different game while still retaining the feel of the original game (and of course, I'm pretty sure you can use it on custom WADs).

You might want to give Hard Reset a try.
