I was just thinking about how if AJ Styles comes back to TNA then all this panic over his departure may look silly in retrospect. In that vein I was wondering if there were any performers who WWE (or heck maybe we can even open it up to some other companies) who were though to be with the promotion for years and years straight, but in actuality left briefly. By left I mean not just being off of TV, but not under contract or any obligation to WWE.
As for Taker and Shawn, I'm pretty sure Taker has had some sort of contract or binding agreement with the WWF/WWE since he first came in. I don't think Shawn ever actually left until after his injury in 1998. I think he was in negotations in 1994 though with WCW around the time he was stripped of the IC title.

Shawn Michaels signed a new contract after he had his retirement match that was more a legends like deal. Where they still use his likeness on video games and merchandise and they at anytime they need him he can do promotional and well appearances when needed. The kind of deal Flair should have signed after he retired. Steady money and doesn't have to wrestle.

Then he joined TNA a few months later.

JR is a loyal company guy who's been fired more times than I care to count.

Chris Jericho does it all the time. I'm talking more about things that flew under the radar.

Not sure I could name any wrestlers at all. Road agents and the like are more likely to be the answer. Ron Simmons being fired briefly, for instance.

Finlay is one that came to mind. Was there for a while both backstage and on camera, got canned, did a farewell tour, and got hired back.

Shawn very briefly quit in 1997 after his backstage fight with Bret Hart, but came back a week or two later.
