Perhaps you are having the same issue I had with Breaking Bad, namely that everyone has told you it's just so amazing that when actually watching it, it just can't match the hype that it's been given? I found Game of Thrones to be very boring. I quit after about 7 episodes, didn't live up to the hype at all. Breaking Bad I found the first 2 seasons were good, but not as good as everyone was making out. Towards the end of Season 3 though, it had won me over and I was in agreement that it was one of the best drama series ever. Then Season 4 and 5 blew me away. Fantastic television. As for Game of Thrones though, I just find it dull. Dull characters, slow moving story. In fact, it suffers from what many American shows do where they have too many episodes in a season and so stretch storylines out way too long to fill in the episodes meaning some of the middle ones are chock full of filler. Like The Walking Dead that I'm watching now, the storyline at Herschel's farm and looking for the lost girl has been very good but it's gone on too long. That could easily have had a few of the episodes compacted into one and it would have worked much better. For me, Game of Thrones had the same problem, but more so. So I tapped out.

I refuse to watch the Nolan Batman movies on those grounds. That and I refuse to believe anyone is a better Joker then Jack Nicholson. No sir I don't buy it. I've watched them and can easily confirm your beliefs.

Dragons that for the most part hang out in a basket, because CGI is expensive, you know? Plenty of snarky awesome Dwarf though.

Hot women who show lots of Impact Wrestling TnA. Oh, and the story is pretty sweet too. Tyrion Lannister rules.

I thought the books were garbage but I gave the show a shot because I figured it'd fix all of the problems I had with the books and it did. Season 1 was OK, season 2 was good enough to keep me watching, and season 3 was damn good overall, so I'm looking forward to season 4.

I want to watch if but I'll probably never will knowing who dies and who betrays who in the red wedding. I did not want to read that spoiler unfiltered or have any warning in a breaking Bad thread. Seriously what the f***!!!!

I know of the red wedding, I don't know who betrays who who dies etc. Just that people are murdered.

It will get spoiled and trust me from first hand experience, that sucks. Somebody spoiled it for me one book before I got to it. I did not spoil it for viewers of the show when I knew it was coming.

I think I made it 25 minutes into the first episodes before the incest parts made me turn it off in disgust. Considering that happens at the end of the episode, you must be either Sherlock or Jean Grey. EXPLAIN YOUR WITCHCRAFT! Also that happens roughly once. Well one part I meant was when the twins are talking. Based on the dialogue and the South Park episode, I assumed they were screwing each other behind the King's back. But the part that made me turn it off was when the blonde haired guy with the weird eyebrows groped his sister's breast. That was just too disturbing for me.

The majority of Season 1 was rather boring, picked-up at the end. The last two seasons have been better but all the characters and concurrent storylines do get confusing at times. Keep hearing how great the books are, tempted to get the set.

I hate sword/shield medieval stuff, except for the original Conan The Barbarian movie and the TV show "Knightmare"

That red wedding was pretty brutal, especially the way Hodor ate Bran.

As to OP's question, nothing. Not every popular thing floats everyone's boat. You identify as a Tolkein/D&D fan and that's probably the key here. Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire is not particularly like Tolkein and it's really not like D&D. For one, there's something of a deconstruction element to it - lots of typical fantasy tropes are subverted. Think like Watchmen as applied to the fantasy genre if you will.
Furthermore, think of the books as a series of historical novels of a fictional, fantasy world. The lands of Westeros and Essos are meant to feel much like Western Europe (mostly England) and the Middle East, with parallels to the real world - Martin originally based the story off of the War of the Roses for example. It's not a story of action and adventure but of politics, intrigue, and events - I imagine you've been lead to believe otherwise. It's a morally complex world - everyone is the hero of their own story but they might very well be the villain to someone else. The show is virtually identical to the books so far, so if you don't like it, you probably won't like them either. On the other hand, prose versus film/television might be enough of a difference that you turn out to prefer the books to the show.
