I'm not getting the outrage. He seems very respectful in ways of the Pym character and wants to include him AND his history as Ant-Man in the film, he just wants to skip up time a bit and start his story with Lang's intro.

I've always liked Scott Lang myself. Yeah he's not as iconic as Pym, but he's always been a good character.
Then again, my favorite Hank incarnation is Yellowjacket.

Variety editor: We just got word that Michael Douglas has a spot in the new Ant-Man film, playing a character called Hank Pym. Write up a quick piece on it, willya? Variety writer: Okay, boss. What's this Hank Pym character known for? Variety editor: Slapping his wife. Variety writer: *Starts typing* "MICHAEL DOUGLAS TO PLAY VILLAIN IN NEW MARVEL FILM" HIGHLY POSSIBLE!

As somebody who doesn't read the comics, I feel nothing. Really I just want the film to be good.

Question: not really following the comics, is Scott in (wait for it) the Ultimate continuity? 616? Or both?

With Catherine Zeta-Jones as The Wasp. I maintain that Elizabeth Banks is the only choice for Janet van Dyne. Geriatric Hank does nothing to change that opinion. They could have a Jay and Gloria relationship. /I'd state a dream casting based on that, but not sure if that would be accepted. //Of course, I mean Al Bundy being Hank :-);-)

Variety posted a story to their website indicating that Pym is actually going to be the villain, taking the Vernan Van Dyne spot. That would make Janet his daughter. This story has since been removed. So Scott can shack up with Janet instead. And Tony's got Ultron. So Pym is just the butt of the joke all over. They're making Hank the bad guy? Remember when us comic nerds were all excited that Marvel had their own movie studio and were going to self-produce films, because it would ensure that no more Marvel properties would get the Hollywood f***-up treatment? We were wroooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong. Now was this promise made before a certain pair of mouse ears wrapped around it?

I'm going to look on the bright side here.
I'm still pretty young. I should still be around when the Avengers film franchise gets rebooted.

It's an adaption of a popular pop culture property. You know, the usual.

Uh... huh...
Honestly aside from Avengers, a lot of these upcoming Marvel movies don't look to be all that great. Captain America 2 is the only one I'm really interested in at the moment.

given Marvel's recent "if it happened in the movies we have to put it in comics" stance it'll be pretty funny to see the hoop jumping to make Hank Pym suddenly an octogenarian.
yeah I'm out. Edgar Wright's my favorite director but he clearly doesn't understand the character if this is the direction he's going in. this movie was going to be a tough sell to begin with, even without alienating fans of the source material.

You should've seen the backlash when it was announced that Hank Pym would have nothing to do with Ultron's origin in the next Avengers movie. I honestly saw more outrage then than I have with this announcement. I can understand why people would be upset though seeing as he's one of the original Avengers members in the 616 Universe. It'd be like not having one of the original Justice League members in that particular film.
