Surly if you lock someone in a room with no sounds at all and no-one but themselves they'll go insane, it's like that NASA place that replicates the silence of space or something similar and people want out after 45 minutes.
I thought places that use solitary confinement like prisons and psychiatric wards were trying to rehabilitate the people there not make them worse.

As an agoraphobic, extremely "type B" person, being locked by myself for a while where nobody else can get to me doesn't sound too bad, provided it's not something like that sound-free room.

Pure sensory deprivation for a prolonged period of time is torture. Temporary solitary confinement is a little different and not torture.

Prisons, in particular, don't simply exist as rehabilitation. Thank goodness. It also exists as punishment. Sometimes people's days need to be made a little worse due to their own bad actions, and if that can be done by locking them up by themselves, then that's a good thing. It should be done with restraint, of course. Nobody wants a horror story like the time they just forgot a guy for several months. That's going too far.

I'd rather be in solitary than general population.Less Sodomy.

Remember that episode of SVU where Stabler volunteers to be put in solitary confinement and goes crazy but the twist is he was only in the room for like five minutes?

I wouldn't mind it if I had something good to read. I never have enough time to read these days.

A lot of people in solitary are there because they're high-profile status makes them a threat, or because they're a clear threat to others. So if your choices are getting shanked or being alone in a room, being alone might be preferable.

There's still sounds in solitary confinement... it's not a sound proofed room.

It is absolutely inarguably torture when it goes on for long periods of time.

I think the trick to not going nuts is if you are somehow able to keep track of how much time has went by.

I've always thought that Solitary confinement would be a much better punishment then general population. I also think criminals would be much less likely to commit crimes knowing that they will be spending another few years in solitary

Nelson Mandela was in solitary for a while, and he was obviously rehabilitated by it. Sometimes a lot of time alone with your thoughts can make you reconsider your path.

I guess I'm in the minority wherein I don't care that someone likely having committed a violent crime ends in solitary confinement for failure to follow rules or not be a psycho. f*** 'em. You know who doesn't end up in solitary confinement in prison? People who don't commit crimes.
As far as psychiatric facilities go, that's a different ball of wax.

I remember once the radio station in my town had a series of tough contests that if anyone completes a challenge, they move to the final round of a draw with the other winners to win 50,000 dollars. One of the tough challenges the show did was someone was suppose to be locked inside a bathroom with no lights, just a cup for tap water and some food for 48 hours while Rebecca Blacks Friday was played on repeat. That was one of the few challenges that wasn't completed and the girl cracked after only 4 hours when she thought a whole day passed.
That was one of the few times I considered entering the contest since most of the challenges were really humiliating or physically scarring or way too physically painful like having to get all 10 of your toenails ripped out or getting the most painful looking genital piercings or to get the entire Stanley cup in exact detail tattood on your back, all for a chance to enter a draw!

Hi all, Solitary Confinement, it could be harsh, but if I were allowed a pencil and some paper I would write down code all day and make them all wonder. If I couldn't then I would just lay there and sleep. I like the solitude, don't get enough of it.
Thanks, Mrs. Marie
