Re: Josh Nason, I wish people would take the same attitude toward wrestling stage names as they do actor and actress stage names. Like... who would write an article about Michael Caine while referring to him as Mr. Micklewhite? I always get secondhand embarrassment for the writer when they do it.

This whole thing feels like the start of the long-rumoured HHH/Vince McMahon feud for control of the WWE. HHH will brag he ran Punk out, Vince will come back to TV, HHH will do the "best for business" stuff until Vince gets the one man that can defeat HHH for control of the WWE...that being Punk.

Yeah I mean if they took it to THAT extreme then eff them, it's already kinda overboard, cause a lot of people are ready to stop watching for these reasons already. I'm more interested in WWE now for the backstage drama than anything, it shouldnt be that interesting but you just dont know wtf is going on. The thing is...I don't need to watch for the backstage drama and THAT isn't going to entice me back because that isn't what I look for in wrestling. It is like worked shoots..it is only fun briefly before it becomes stupid. And once it becomes stupid...then you REALLY lose the audience. That's why I don't get why anyone wants this to be a work. It would be one of the stupidest works ever.

I'm not gonna wade through 30 or so pages to check, so forgive me, but has it been mentioned that David Shoemaker on Grantland's Cheap Heat podcast said he has a source that told him this ISN'T a work? Obviously anyone can say they have a source and make stuff up, but Shoemaker doesn't really have a track record of making up newz. Also, go listen to Cheap Heat. It's pretty great.

I highly doubt it's a work too because honestly look at the wwe's current product. You have the Wyatts, Lesnar destroying people randomly, the Shield and all sorts of things that are within the Universe, the Bryan situation to top it all. The idea that this whole thing is a work throws all of that stuff off. It is like it's in another realm and when that realm gets spotlight as a worked storyline and then you have to look at what's currently a storyline, it looks silly.
Their best option is acknowledging what has happened and try to work it into their story. I still stick by what I said earlier and say Monday the Authority should come out and run Punk down. Afterwards Bryan will come out and say Punk left because they were horrible bosses and they were running the company to the ground. They're going to have to find a way to use this momentum and push Bryan to greater heights without making everything else look dumb.

So, after 81 pages I want to know...
What was CM Punk doing with Balls Mahoney, and why did he take him home with him?

No matter what the outcome of Punk's status with the company is, doing what you suggested basically fits the mold of practically any situation. This is by far the best suggestion I would give to WWE if they needed a way to move forward. And that's exactly why I would expect them to not do it. The reason being...WWE has no humility. They refuse to make themselves look bad or look like they made a mistake. Even if it's one that would fix the problems with what is happening with the product for their viewers, the only thing that Vince cares about is their corporate image. Vince has tried so SO desperately to gain the respect of anyone who ridicules wrestling with all the PR nonsense they do, tooting their own horn and constantly parading around about how much WWE cares. It's such bullshit. The company is skin deep. And below the skin is all sorts of problems on how to run a company. It's really strange because the steps they've taken to try to look good, they still put out a very lazy vindictive product week after week after week. If they want the respect, they should start with their own fanbase.

It's really strange because the steps they've taken to try to look good, they still put out a very lazy vindictive product week after week after week. If they want the respect, they should start with their own fanbase. I've said before that WWE is a feudal state. It's not a company. It's run by a single liege (Vince) with his close advisors (Trips, Steph, Dunn, etc.) and who has various subject vassals who get stuff from a loose combination of merit, loyalty and quid pro quo. The emphasis is on what the leaders personally enjoy, and what keeps the company alive, rather than what increases their income and what increases their fame. Like a Medieval state, survival--not wealth--is the preferred goal. Vince makes enough money as it is. So do his friends. They could make more, but doing so would require the modification of the current system. And like any feudal monarchy, once the subjects know they can push you to enact one reform, they're going to push for more reforms. Vince & co. aren't going to make any serious changes because doing so means that there'd have to be a massive overhaul of anything and everything that they do and they'd be held accountable for their actions, which in their mind is completely unacceptable.

Yeah, it's a major problem. One thing I get more and more disappointed with is how they talk about the company more than they talk about the characters that embody it. They'll go into great depths as to what WWE is, but they continue to get worse with promoting what's actually happening. It makes no goddamn sense. What's worse is who they're telling this shit to. THEIR AUDIENCE!!! Why??? Why the HELL are you trying to sell us on why they're such a great company? That's the shit you should give to your sponsors. Stick to storytelling, not advertising yourselves.

Might I just suggest that a little insider gamesmanship would be refreshing. If it were me, I'd see this as a way to challenge the fanbase who are going to be the ones mostly wrapped up in it. AND Punk would TOTALLY go for this...
1) Punk hates fans who get caught up in all the "behind-the-scenes" workings, rumors, etc.
2) Punk hates smart marks.
3) Punk hates fans.
(Does that about cover it?)
Anyway, so here's the setup. Punk HAS to (I mean HAS to) overplay this and come across as the whiniest little you-know-what that actually makes it seem like he took his ball and went home. BUT, you have to slowroll it. Exhibit A: do exactly what they're doing now. Mystery, speculation, people up in arms. The loyals coming to his defense. "Good job! WWE sucks!" People wanting WWE to get its head out of its butt. Et cetera, et cetera, you get the point.
So the bait is set. People are seriously crapping all over this whole ordeal. Now, what this does is empower Punk. Eventually (close to Mania perhaps) he gets a little more open about it and drops some ridicule their way. (Again, remember, he lays low and is the "bigger man" about it, being professional, and just walking away under his own terms.) But yeah, as Mania approaches, he gets a bit ballsy. He can't resist. Armchair booking.
Now, again, the marks flock to him. Some will rally behind him during this new period of "openness." So what's happening is that WWE is GETTING attention and getting views just so some of those folks can see Punk's point and what might happen next with that. MEANWHILE, some opposition grows to Punk among those who can start seeing a slightly classless side to him. It gets to the point where people might even say "You left, idiot. Keep your mouth shut." OR "If you don't care about the game anymore, then why comment on it?" The whole you can't have your cake and eat it too argument.
This is all a slow bait.
The pot gets stirred enough eventually to where Punk "can't resist" and starts speaking up to the critics (the non-supportive marks) and taking a more active role. BUT, he has to appear in the wrong and even more whiny.
To make this shorter than it really would be in reality, the idea is that Punk has all the ammo in the world to turn this into a "I was right all along" bit, but he fudges it up along the way ever so gradually and tries to save face, but becoming just a whiny, annoying butt about it all. And what marks hate is just that very thing. *HE'S GOT TO BAIT THE MARKS AND PULL THE OL' SWITCHAROO AND BECOME THE VERY THING THEY HATE.*
It would work. I mean, we're talking annoying as crap entitled little brat. And while this start getting closer and closer to this direction, Vince or HHH offers an olive branch because the Internet/fanbase/whatever is so hot for him. He no-shows and isn't active in any programming. But he takes his battle to the Internet and mass media, backstabbing them and ridiculing them whenever he gets the chance. He is NEVER on-screen through all of this because it would seem like "oh, it's a storyline."
So the bait and switch is that WWE tries to smooth things over on their programming and takes their lumps for the early part of this, but PUNK is the one who sabotages Punk by going over the line and just being completely unlikeable. The end result would be Punk EVENTUALLY coming back in a nonchalant way on some event and making waves, but in a total Jonny Fairplay kind of way. In fact, if you're having trouble imagining the type of "annoying" I'm talking about earlier, just imagine how Johnny Fairplay would handle it. THAT'S who Punk is becoming.
The goal all along--which is Punk driven behind-the-scenes--was to find a way to actually become a heel. A real heel. Someone who CAN get booed. He has to make people sick of him FOR REAL and then he can come back and achieve that goal. Of course, he's going to win and be underhanded and tick all of us off.
So yeah, that's something that would make sense to me. And I would applaud that kind of subversive tactic, because there are people SO invested in this that there is much much baiting to be had in an outside-the-box sort of mentality.
