Anyone remember when this first start? Did it start around the time when they got the NFL license? In the 90's I don't remember many people hated them

For me, it was when 2K lost their NFL license, meaning we were stuck with Madden. NFL 2K5 is still my favorite football game of all time.

I never heard a peep about it until the Origin debacle and the Mass Effect 3 ending. But those two things combined to irritate a lot of people.

There seemed to be a lot of annoyance over the Season/DLC passes, that was the first time I was aware of it.

There is actually two different eras of EA hate. The first was in the early 2000s, and was mainly because EA was seen as an "evil empire" snatching up damn near any studio that allowed them to but them. Of course they would eventually close most of them.......
Then things changed the first few years John Riccitiello was in charge and EA started making a lot of new IP and were not doing the typical EA things. That was the period where EA was the "good guys" again(and Activision's hate was at its highest). That lasted for a couple of years, then EA started doing their dumb shit again, like requiring all their games have online multiplayer and Project $10, and the SimCity launch, etc.

I think the NFL license started it, but I started to notice it picking up more with the online passes, charging people to access online content on their games (and having it expire for people who bought it new). That was in 2011, and it just sort of escalated from there. Then there was the interview where they basically said they didn't want a game if they couldn't franchise it, the CEO calling gamers bitter, trying to use a charity to peddle DLC, so on and so forth.

For me, it was when I first played Madden '01 for the PS2. I was so excited to play my first then next gen football game and was really looking forward to starting a franchise and building the ill fated Browns into a legitimate football machine.
I set it up. Signed a few free agents to sure up the secondary. Go to play my very first game and on the very first play after the kickoff, Kevin Hardy comes around the end, no sells two blockers and puts Tim Couch out of football.

Personally I hate them for the part they played in putting the Oddworld series on life support. Then they got worse with the other crap mentioned in this thread. To top it all off they've ensured I won't be playing a new Star Wars game for quite some time.

For me it was when they screwed up the "Command & Conquer" series.

I'm amongst the very small group of people who thinks 2K sucks at everything and would be happier playing NBA Live instead of NBA 2K. To me, it had to be in the mid-2000s when EA became one of the first groups to start going overboard with its studio grabbing.

I hate them for that time I went to their Santa Monica office and tried to drop off my resume for an animator job, only for the security guard threaten to pepper spray me.

I'm still very irritated that there's no Dungeon Keeper 3. Luckily, with a bit of effort, I can still run the original DK and DK2 on my laptop. Oh, and f*** their new version of Dungeon Keeper.

AFAIK It was when the NFL wanted an exclusive video game deal, and EA & Madden outbid Sega & 2K for the rights. Mind you, this was something the NFL wanted to do, not EA. But it opened the floodgates, and the EAHATE was in full effect, so bad I actually left the message board I was a member of because I couldn't stand it creeping into every thread.

It was about the time I saw the Katy Perry stuff pack on sale that I realized it wasn't the quirky little game I fell in love with any more. Also, f*** them for making people pay to use a created team in career mode in FIFA. Would be like if THQ/2K made you pay extra to use CAWs in Universe Mode.
