All right, was watching Starrcade 85 recently, and I have to ask...
What the hell was up with that? Was Garvin being punished for something, or was this his idea to do that?
And was there any payoff to the whole thing, or was it quietly dropped?

Not sure, but look up Big Mama's shoot interview, she has a funny story about her reaction to "Ms. Lively".

I have no idea what the purpose was, other than to make Jim Cornette look like a fool. I thought it was because Ron Garvin lost a losers leaves town match to Black Bart, and this was his way of sneaking in, but no that is not the case, immidately after that Garvin was reinstated after they reviewed the video tape and because Black Bart cheated with help from Tully Blanchard and Baby Doll, so Garvin was reinstated, and after they did the Miss Atlanta Lively angle, after Starrcade 85 it was forgotten.
This is not the last time Garvin dressed up in drag, 1 and half years later he disguised himself as Precisous when she had to go out on a date with Flair after he beat Jim Garvin in a cage match (it is on the Great American Bash 87 tape BTW) he disguised himself as her and knocked out Flair and Dillon in a hotel room.
Garvin has some fetes with drag, I am sure when he lost the loser must retire match to Greg Valentine and he was a referee, I am sure he wanted to dress up in drag as part of the angle, and Vince vetoed that. I am not saying that happened, just it wouldn't surprise me.
And funny how things go full circle, he got the best of Cornette at Starcade 85, one year later Cornette gets his revenge at Starrcade 86 when Big Bubba beats Ronnie Garvin.

It was odd seeing a "woman" blade.

It was probably the same thought process that led to "Virgilina" teaming with Roddy Piper to feud with Ted Dibiase and Sherri.

I'm watching NWA '85 and reviewing it for a couple of other boards, and while this may be a tad off topic...
...Big Mama may have been the ugliest woman in the history of anything ever.

I was just watching Summerslam 89, and by gawd, was Ronnie Garvin corny in his ring introduction of the Valentine match.

You aren't Big Evil from the UWF Wrestling Reviews board, are you? The one and only sadly. Judging by it being a month since you've reviewed an NWA show, I am guessing regular exposure to Big Mama did damage to your eyeballs?

Whats worse, is that it happened right after the Magnum/Tully match. You go from one of the bloodiest, most intense matches in wrestling, to cartoonish stuff that even Vince would reject.

I never noticed Big Mama's face. Too busy staring at her other assets to care.

Haha no I have just been really, really busy at work and when I get home the last thing I feel like doing is reviewing wrestling, especially with so many TV shows to catch up on. Now that it's getting into summer time, you'll see my reviews increase heavily. Especially once I'm drunk on the weekends.

I forget who said it, but somebody in a shoot interview described it as "another case of someone bringing their personal lives into the business," but immediately moved on to something else. I can't even remember who said it, so take it with a grain of salt. It was probably a joke anyway.
