So I just watched the Warrior:The Ultimate Legend documentary (brilliant stuff) and during it I saw an image of two of the most popular, iconic superstars of the eighties standing facing each other, like this:
Both Hulk and Warrior look like cartoon characters; big, tanned, muscular and dressed in colorful costumes. The two characters were heroes to millions of children. There's the Warrior with his full head of thick hair, which he kept into his 50's. And there's The Hulkster with... well I can't help noticing just how ridiculous Hogan's hair looked. Don't get me wrong, they both look pretty funny, what with being muscled up wrestlers in their underwear, but Hulk's thinning mullet.. Yeah it looks really quite funny.
No disrespect to balding men everywhere, but how did Hogan's hairline never affect his career negatively? (I remember hearing that Vince instructed other wrestlers never to mention the Hulkster's 'do in their promos) Maybe he was just in the right profession? If he was an actor, he would of had to have wigged up.
Yet as a wrestler, and let's face it, Hulk was never really a 'looker', he had the body, the handlebar mustache, the charisma, the persona which all mattered more than a full head of hair. However, if Hogan was the same guy in the 80's, just as popular etc, but looked like John Morrison and then was balding all over the place, I think that would affected his career as it would then have been a pretty boy losing his looks.
How come Hulk never shaved his head, and if he had would that have affected his career as well? Would he have looked too threatening to his young fans? Was the blonde hair (even if it was rapidly retreating from the top of his head) too linked to him, too iconic to just shave off? I don't believe the shaved head look was quite as in style in the 80's as it became in the 90's when another balding, blonde man became a superstar as huge as Hogan:
Would Hulk Hogan shaving his head in the eighties, have then negated Steve Austin coming along in the nineties, with what for the time was a fairly unique look in wrestling and fairly iconic to Austin?
In fairness to Hulk, once he got older, the skullet actually kind of suited him and looked more age appropriate:
One other point to make on wrestler hair, the three biggest wrestlers of all time were/are all balding:
