Is it just me, or did Savage have a different version of "pomp and circumstance" in his early days in the wwf? I was watching the Wrestling Classic and Savage's music sounded slightly different than the one we're all familiar with.

Just a complete guess, but I imagine that while Pomp and Circumstance is in public domain, they were using a protected arrangement of it when he first came in, just like most of the other guys were using "real" songs. When they started phasing everyone over to WWF-created themes, they simply used a new arrangement for Pomp that they could claim and wouldn't have to pay royalties on.

Elgar's works, including "Pomp and Circumstance", only entered public domain in the US in February, the 70th anniversary of Elgar's death. It is possible that Vince had not bought the license for the recording he originally used and received a C&D letter. I'm not sure whether the recording which replaced it was done in-house or a licensed recording, but I suspect Vince paid _something_ to the estate to use even the score.

Yeah, he switched a presumably WWF-produced version around 1988...it was definitely in place by WM4. (You can tell cause it sounds more "polished" and less like a recording)
What's odd is that the WWF version was once the full song, but months later it was a looped version.

I for one don't understand why Randy had pomp and circumstance when his brother, the genius, actually had the genius gimmick with the robe, mortar board and all. Shouldn't HE be coming out to pomp and circumstance?

Weird connected story: Pomp and circumstances was actually the first piece of music ever used in pro wrestling history, as it was Gorgeous George's entrance. And Savage, it's most famous user, licensed the Gorgeous George name from the Wagner family in late '98, originally for Lanny (who was under contract), but eventually used for Stephanie Bellars, his then real life girlfriend.

I really hate how in the WWE games he comes out to a crappy MIDI version of the theme.

If you think that's odd, listening to his intro in his few New Japan matches is really strange as it starts much earlier in the song before where it was usually started.
