Their fans can be some of the most unsufferable know-it-alls in sports. Watch the movie "For Love of the Game". Pretty much sums up every god awful annoying Yankee fan sterotype. Red Sox fans are considerably worse, and I'm a Red Sox fan. Not to harp on you or anything, but Yankees have had that. The Red Sox fans started to go nuts when they won the title in 2004.

I think it's well summed up by now - sustained success, massive spending, and ownership/fanbase that don't exact behave in a humble fashion over it.
Manchester United were like that for a good twenty years, which is why this season was so enjoyable seeing them flounder. Though I fear Liverpool are about to return to being hated, what with how I expect their fanbase to go on about the 2014 title for a good 25 years. That and Brendan Rodgers and Luis Suarez.

What's the problem with Rodgers? I can understand the dislike for Suarez as he's a tit but I've never really heard anything that bad about Rodgers, the opposite in fact.

They beat everyone else's favorite teams by spending a lot more money. Also, they have the NY hype machine behind them.

Not that I believe it, but I think the subtle side of Rodger's ego rankles on fans sometimes. That and big team manager's being under scrutiny for everything they say ever, whether it's about fouls, transfer rumours, or their favourite outfits. Seeing the huge picture of himself in his home on that rather bizarre TV promo series for LFC made a lot of non Liverpool fans irritated in my friendship groups. I'm an Everton fan for the record but eh, Liverpool are cool and ego is fine in a sport of confidence, the successful -however new the success feels- will always be hated, and the figureheads will be the ones who get most of the hate.

I know why I hate the Yankees, but it has nothing to do with how successful they've been. I'm not the type to hate someone else for their successes. I'm sure quite a few people do hate the Yankees because of their plethora of rings, but the fact that that's a go-to Yankee fan reasoning for why people hate them is a good showing of an actual reason people don't like them. It's pompous. It's the equivalent of yelling "SCOREBOARD!"
But I think the biggest reasoning for most peoples' hatred of the Yankees is the thought that they aren't a working mans' team. They're up there in the ivory tower with the money to buy and sell whoever they want. They're seen as the face of greed and wealth in sports. Because of that and the amount of money they can throw at players, fans don't see them as having to work to win like every other team. Like they expect to buy all the pieces and win based on that alone. And the fact that they can bring in whoever they want for however much money they're willing to spend makes their players seem like mercenaries. Fact is, a lot of teams do this these days. The Dodgers are Yankees West now, and my Sox are certainly no stranger to it.
People forget that the players still have to work hard and play the game to win. Me? I'm not going to ever blame someone for getting paid. It's crazy to me how that thinking works. These players work, fight, and scratch to get these monster contracts and we love them for it, but then once they get the money, they're bad people.
Like I said, people see the Yankees and New York in general as the face of greed. The Yankees are the big corporation of baseball, and people don't like corporations.
I hate the Yankees because I'm a Red Sox fan. I hate the Yankees players, most Yankee fans, and Yankee management. But that isn't based on any rationalization or reasoning.... it's because they're the Yankees players, fans, and management. I hate the Yankees because they're the Yankees and not the Red Sox.

1. Bland corporate image. 2. Players are made to be saints 3. Lots of bandwagon fans. 4. They win too much There's the stereotypical New York ego of "We're better than you", the team for many years WAS just plain better than everyone else (having a HoFer at every position helps), their owner was a huge egomaniac and had I believe two "lifetime bans" from baseball due to some pesky criminal charges, and they are constantly in the media spotlight even when they sucked bad in the 80's. Uh...other than Jeter and Rivera none of those guys from the dynasty years are going to the HOF.

People always hate the best. At least the Yankees don't bullshit everyone and pretend they aren't a money made dynasty like those jags over at Fenway.

I don't hate the Yankees for their spending. The Red Sox do the same thing. My hatred is a little more personal. As a Red Sox fan growing up I faced two hard truths. One, no matter how well the Sox looked it the season would end in disappointment. And two, when it happened Yankee fans would always be there rub it in your face. The Yankees were like the next door neighbor who always flaunted their success right front of you and you could do nothing but grumble under your breath. And add the fact that their dynasty began because the Sox were owned by a man who cared more for Broadway than baseball so he sold one of the greatest players of all time to them to finance a play and for 86 years we had to suffer for it. That's why 2004 was so f***ing satisfying. Not only did they finally win the World Series (the first of three in a decade) but after so many years of Yankee fans constantly tanuting us about choking they would be the only team in baseball history to go up 3 games to none and lose. Now there are people who say Red Sox fans have become just as arrogant as Yankee fans. To that I say, YOU'RE GOD DAMN RIGHT WE ARE!!!! After eating shit for so long we're gonna revel in our success. Just imagine how bad Cubs fans are going to be when they finally win one.

I am a lifelong Yankees fan (I was young, but I remember the days of Alvaro Espinoza, Mike Pagliarulo, Andy Hawkins, and f***ing Steve Balboni. So even though I was all of 12 when the 1996 Yankees won, I was on top of the world for six years. And I absolutely loved the fact that those f***ing bums up in New England couldn't win shit. Chanting "1918" was a way of life for us douchebag Yankee fans. 2004 wass a dark year, and the only year I couldn't bring myself to watch the deciding moments of the Series. It only made me hate the Sox, their fans, and anyone involved with them, even more.
That said, if I didn't have that lifelong love for the Yankees, I would absolutely hate them.

Yankees!? YANKEES!? ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *trashes room* Seriously though, what radradsley said. Pretty much the same deals as with Manchester United in England. But Manchester United aren't the most successful team in England! I think success is a factor but I think it's more about the way that success is achieved. Man Utd are disliked for a few reasons, not least the behaviour of Ferguson, yet the dominant United side of the 60s was liked because Matt Busby was a decent guy. Same can be said for Chelsea being disliked due to the way the owners have treated some of their Managers, the antics of their Captain and the general twattery of Mourinho. When Liverpool were dominant, some people weren't keen on Bill Shankly, yet everyone loved Bob Paisley and as such, the team wasn't as disliked as others who dominated. My bad. I don't follow Football outside of Australia so I tend to forget about the pre Premier League days. They're definitely the most famous. I've noticed the most famous teams like Man U and the Yankees are usually the most hated.
