Suggested by Digital Witness in the Random Indy Pics/Gifs thread, I've been meaning to make summaries out of my favorite matches from Puroresu/Indepedent wrestling hailing from all companies from around the world. Along with these reviews/summaries, I'm also going to include snippets of the match in .gif format (2 gifs per post). If you have a favorite match that you want me to review or summarize, please feel free to include them here. So without further ado, let's start! NJPW (4/3/80) - Gran Hamada vs BabyfaceOver the years, many people have said that the Dynamite Kid/Tiger Mask matches were the most influential and avant-garde at the time. This match is somewhat a prelude to those series and it's amazing how quickly this style of wrestling was cultivating in the 80's. This match is no different. Good matwork, fast paced action in a decent amount of time so be sure to check it out. Here's a preview:

I'm somewhat familiar with Gran Hamada. Did Babyface go by any other names? I don't think I've heard of any wrestlers actually known as "Babyface".

Enough flipping and highspots to fit in on a NWA Wildside card.

NJPW (8/8/94) – Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs Hiroshi HaseTheir match from May that year is more memorable since it was Wrestling Dontaku. I find this match to be a bit better because there's so much to enjoy: great matwork, charisma, payback spots, and even hardway blood off a comedy spot which leads to something a bit more serious near the end. As always, here's a preview:

That Fujiwara Armbar out of the German Suplex is sick. Then again, I'd expect any Fuijiwara Armbar put on by Fujiwara himself to look nasty.

NJPW (2/19/95) - Shinya Hashimoto© vs Lord Steven Regal (IWGP Heavyweight Championship)It's no surprise Regal will bust out that crude yet efficient style of British wrestling in this bout, especially when he's up against a destructive brute like Shinya Hashimoto. Hashimoto's been champion for nearly a year and has yet to be defeated. Regal gets the upper hand most of the time but Hashimoto fires back with his ferocious kicks. Two different styles that compliment each other and just smash mouth through and through. Here's a preview and give it a watch:

Great review alot of people do not understand how important Hamada was...Review this... videos.sapo.pt/4tAgGflZVG4W59d6hVH2Can be both the best match of all time and also a complete disgrace As requested: ROH Supercard of Honor II (3/31/06) - Do Fixer vs Blood GenerationThis match is fun, but to be honest, their previous matches from Japan were better executed. That didn't stop me from enjoying this match though. Great spots, build, and the atmosphere makes it a lot better. So if you're a fan of Dragon Gate or new to it, this is a great sample of what tag team wrestling DG displays. Here's a preview:

IWE (9/26/73) – Animal Hamaguchi vs Mighty Inoue Brief exposition: The International Wrestling Enterprise (IWE) was a promotion that Isao Yoshiwara (the founder and one of the 4 former directors that operated JWA after Rikidozan’s death) made shortly after having issues with JWA’s treasurer, which lead to his departure. It not only exposed European wrestling to Japanese fans, but it also brought over many stars who were then unknown to North America, most notably, Billy Robinson and Andre The Giant(who went by his real name at the time). It closed down in 1981 and the remaining roster some jumped ship to New Japan(Kimura, Animal Hamaguchi, and Isamu Teranishi) to start the famous "inter-promotional" feud while the others went to All Japan(Mighty Inoue, Ashura Hara, Goro Tsurumi). Here is a gem that this marvelous company left behind. This is a solid, solid match here. The workrate is off the charts and their personalities feed off each other. It’s a remarkable match given the timeframe it’s in and I’d highly recommend it. Here’s a preview:

That is definitely European-style wrestling. Just needs some European uppercuts, and then it might be very European.

NJPW (5/3/95) – Shinya Hashimoto© vs Keiji Mutoh (IWGP Heavyweight Championship)Earlier in the year, Mutoh had set out to capture the IWGP championship. Unfortunately, he came up short in a No. 1 contender’s match against Scott Norton. Mutoh takes a short sabbatical and returns more ambitious than ever and issues a challenge to Shinya Hashimoto to put his belt on the line at the upcoming Wrestling Dontaku event, to which Hashimoto agrees. Hashimoto’s been champ for a year after successfully defending it 10 times. An underrated contest, although the middle part of the match seems to slow the pace, it picks up when Mutoh starts gaining advantage. Here’s a preview and be sure to check it out:

AJPW (3/5/77) – Jumbo Tsuruta© vs Billy Robinson (2/3 falls match; NWA United National Heavyweight Title)Remarkable, remarkable stuff here. Where to even begin? The selling, matwork, and a finish stretch that's filled with tension and drama. Robinson makes everything feel engaging and suspenseful. The chemistry these two had is something that no one can nor will ever replicate. It is one of my all-time FAVORITE matches from '70's wrestling and it's a must-see for any fan who enjoys great wrestling and psychology. Here's a preview:
