How come so many authors stick to writing the same character over and over again? It's more interesting with those who go with someone new most of the time. It's why I like John Grisham so much. Though there are similarities between many of his lawyers at least he tries to come up with new characters.
I don't know, maybe they try but find the new characters similar to their regular character and decide they may as well stick to him/her.

Best to stick to whatever sells.

Sometimes it is money, some of it is feeling they still have more to tell with a given character, while a lot of it is the hope it will secure their legacy. I guess they think there is more prestige in writing an epic than a series of one offs.

Some of it is also wanting to continue to take the character through his/her life and see where that leads.
It can be both easier and harder to do that.
