dailyjournal.net/view/story/7a8a5fcc987149739d5a4ff74be213b7/US--TV-MTVs-Daniels/Yea, I know, MTV sucks, but this is kind of interesting as it is often credited with starting the modern era of reality television with The Real World, and like them or not, they do things with the youth culture in mind, so they obviously know their trends. Now, MTV has a 49 year old woman with quite a background running things. I'm not going to start watching because of this, but it sounds like they see what's coming and reality tv is still around, but it's taking a hit. Thoughts?

According to the article it seems like they're still going to be producing a lot of reality shows, but if they can get away from that, that's a good thing.
I do think this is kind of interesting coming off the heels of SyFy's announcement they're going to try and do more hour long scripted dramas and less cheesy B-movie Sharknado type stuff.
The success of Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, etc really got in the heads of a lot of execs. I've seen variations on the phrase, "We want to have our own hit, like walking dead" in a bunch of articles relating to networks recently.

I'm dead serious. I haven't watched MTV since Wrestling Society X
and then ONLY for that. Last time I watched MTV a bunch was probably 1997.

I will say that, in terms of MTV's in-house production team, they have some of the absolute most talented editors on the planet. Like, obscenely talented best-in-the-world types. If MTV's veering into more scripted content, the chance for these editors to really flex their creative muscle has be very, very excited.

If SyFy wants hour long shows then they can un-cancel A Town Call Eureka and Warehouse 13.

I haven't heard about this, but it does surprise me. I don't watch SyFy at all, but even I have heard of Sharknado, so it really made people aware of the channel and I'm surprised that they'd want to move away from that.

But most of their shows are already scripted.

I am kinda sad they didn't renew Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous.
That show was probably the best thing they've done in years.

MTV's scripted programming isn't that bad at all.

That would be a dramatic change if reality shows weren't scripted.

I haven't watched MTV on a regular basis since Real World San Diego (the 2011 version with the angry gay dude).

MTV is not ever going to be as good as it was in the 90's when it was full of indy animation (Plympton, The Maxx, Green Jello music videos, Liquid Television, etc.). It was nice to see they tried to recreate that a few years ago, but the only good thing about it was the Bevis and Butthead reboot.
Of course, I could be wrong. If they can get Andy Warhol to direct music videos from the grave, I'll give it a chance.

I haven't watched MTV since Celebrity Deathmatch was on years ago. And even that was just the occasional watch when channel surfing with nothing else on.
Whenever I see/hear about programmes on MTV, they all sound utter trash.

This is the problem with that channel, man. I remember when you could watch MTV and get nothing but reality TV shows about stupid spoiled people partying 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it was great. That was the golden age, man. Don't they realize that the M in MTV stands for 'Meat Market Live Cams'? ...dark day for cable, honestly.
